Chapter 1

I wandered through the empty halls of the academy. It's old rickety floors and walls creaking with every gust of wind, like it could fall down at any moment.

The academy used to be much nicer and fancier, but since the dark lord had taken over the land where the old academy was. It had to be moved to this place and enchanted so that the he would not be able to find it.

It is a shame they couldn't do that with the rest of the lands because if they did, thousands of people would still be alive. Including my parents.

They had died 4 years ago, just 1 year after the dark lord had slowly started to take over. They were killed in a battle. A battle that was our last hope in stopping the great evil that has plagued our lands.

Before they left they had taught me how to fight, to defend myself in case they didn't return. They had also told me to always stay away from the danger that lurked, and to never be noticed by any of the terrible monsters out there.

I was only 12 when I got the news that they had unfortunately been killed along with thousands of other people, whose children were now orphans just like me.

The academy's first priority after they had spelled the place. Was to find all the children like me, who had nowhere to go and enroll them so they could hopefully have a future.

So here I am, 4 long years in this place and it is finally coming to a close. The headmasters have been very kind and welcoming to us, these past few years, but they can only do so much. The academy needs to create space for more kids and we're just taking up room.

I don't know what I'll do once I graduate. Maybe I'll leave the magic border of the school and enter a realm that was once full of peace and prosperity, but is now full of darkness and evil.

Or I could become one of the homeless creeps that live just inside the border. Where it is safe and just sit and wait for helpless people to come by so I can steal food and valuables from them.

Hopefully I can find a nice quiet place just outside the border, and have an ordinary peaceful life. Not likely but I'm still dreaming.

That is why I have been dreading this day so much. It is the day that the prophecy called for, the day when the 5 will finally awaken and choose their human partners. To finally stop the evil that is around us.

I know it is not likely, but what if I am chosen, there goes my shot at a peaceful and happy life.

From what I know there are the 4 elemental dragons, earth, air, water, fire and an energy dragon. The dragon that binds them together, their leader. I can't quite remember their names, but they all have meanings.

My friend isobel would know, she is an expert on the 5. Ever since the dark lord took over she has obsessed over the prophecy and knows it by heart. She is always reciting it:
When the 5 rise the time has come.
Do not succumb
To the evil that plagues the land
The 5 will choose
partners for life they are to become
One born of earth
One born of fire
One born of air
one born of water
But There is one that will bind them all
The one pair that shall fight them all
For when they are United all hope is never lost

Do I believe the prophecy?
No, I do not think that a group of 5 people and 5 dragons would stand a chance against the dark lords whole army. It's full of demons for crying out loud!

Every second that ticks by is a second closer to the dreaded moment. Nobody has seen the 5 dragons for over 500 years. There are rumours questioning whether they exist at all.

I guess everyone will find out soon. We will all gather in the auditorium and wait for 5 mysterious creatures to just magically appear.

Just as I reached the end of the hall, the bell rang. The noise caused the walls to start frantically creaking and groaning as if they were desperately trying to hold themselves together.

It's almost time. I need to head to my dorm room and get dressed into my formal uniform. We may be the only academy around but that doesn't mean we don't have uniform.

Once I reached the dorms I saw Isobel. She let out a loud screach when she saw me, deafening my ears. 'OH. MY. GOSH. DO YOU KNOW WHAT TODAY IS! HOLY MOLY, ITS FINALLY THE DAY!'

shaking my shoulders aggressively. 'WE FINALLY GET TO MEET THE 5!' I blinked at her, 'ARE YOU FRICKEN KIDDING ME! TODAY IS A DAY THAT WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY FOREVER!' She yelled.

'I know what today is, I'm just not as exited as you' I said exasperated.

'OMG you are sooo annoying! Like today is the most exciting day like, ever. Yet here you are being a boring little squirm worm!' Her bright brown eyes found mine as she spoke, a playful spark in them.

'Don't talk to me like that young lady! We're going to the auditorium now so you can stop screaming and calm down' I kept my tone flat, hiding any trace of the tiny bit of excitement I was feeling. However I think she could tell from the tiny gleam in my eyes.

'Ugh fine, keep pretending you don't care,' she rolled her eyes at me and marched out the door, with me trailing behind.
