The One

I froze as she walked into the room. I couldn't seem to tear my eyes away from her as she breezed past me with hardly a glance in my direction.

She was perfect.

Her throat was slender, with a choker adorning it, her nose in the air, her auburn hair billowing after her as she walked by.

She was perfect.

And I was hooked.

I had known for a while now what I wanted. And her presence multiplied my urge to do what I had been longing to do for ages.

She was the one.

I just knew it.

But before I could make a move, I would have to get closer to her.

I did everything I could to make her let me in. I partnered with her and sat with her in every class we had together, and gradually she started warming up to me.

Soon she was calling me to hang out with her friends and spend time after school. I was growing closer and closer to my goal.

But I was also growing more and more impatient.

Soon I would get what I wanted.

Soon the time would be right.

Soon.

We grew closer still, I comforted her when she needed it, laughed with her when she was happy, and stuck to her side like we were glued at the hip.

Eventually, she asked me to meet her at a cafe after school.

Just the two of us.

Alone.

Together.

Finally.

I smiled at the thought.

I couldn't wait.

As the day drew nearer, my anticipation heightened, and I could hardly wait.

I had planned everything down to the t, it would be perfect.

We went to the cafe, we talked, we laughed, and then I made my move.

I asked her if she would go with me to the Hollow.

The Hollow was a cave, of sorts. It was near the beach, and while it was safe to visit in the day, in the night the tides swept in and mercilessly swept away anyone and anything in their way, never to return.

Many people still ventured there. Rebellious teenagers, trying to prove their worth; couples who wanted to etch their names just above the tide so they were immortalised. It was almost like a test of your bravery and ingenuity.

She realised why I wanted to go there - I wanted to etch our names into the walls of the cave. Just not for the reason she thought.

She agreed to go. It was still daytime, and we weren't in any danger of getting caught in the waves.

When we finally reached the cave, the sun was just about to set, and we would have just enough time for what I was planning.

I told her I had something I wished to give her, told her to close her eyes.

She, in her naivety, agreed immediately.

I pulled out of my purse the object I had been itching to use since we left.

The steel glinted off the device, and the setting sun made it seem as if the knife had been coated in blood.

It hadn't.

But it would be soon.

I smiled to myself.

Not just soon, but now.

The time for waiting was over.

She opened her mouth to ask me what was taking me so long, a hint of a laugh in her voice, just as I plunged the knife straight through her heart, stopping its beating forever.

I quite enjoyed that.

The games, the manipulation, had gone on a bit longer than to my liking, but this moment more than made up for it.

Yes, I always knew she would be the one, my first.

And I had a feeling she wouldn't be the last.

I carved our names on the wall, a mark of my accomplishment, something no one but me would recognise the significance of.

Well, no one else alive, anyways.

I turned and left the Hollow, passing her by with hardly a glance in her direction, choker adorning my neck, nose in the air, hair billowing out behind me.

I had no need to worry, after all.

The tide would clear up after me.
