• "Quick, what's our exit strategy?"
• "Our what?"
• "Oh God, we're all gonna die,"
• "Oh shut up, we're gonna be just fine, Emersyn,"
• "Yeah, if you consider dead 'just fine',"
• "You're so dramatic,"
• "Says you,"
• "Whatever," Jaxon was smirking, like always. Ugh I hate him so much sometimes.
• "Seriously though, what are we going to do if we need to get out?" I asked, "If we don't have an exit plan, we're absolutely screwed,"
• "Blah blah blah, we're gonna be fine," Jaxon answered, his voice arrogant, he stupid smirk not fading once.
• "Ugh! Can't you just be serious for two seconds?!"
• Jaxon paused for a moment at that, and I smiled a little, thinking maybe I finally got through to him.
• "Eh, I've thought about it, but I'm afraid it's impossible," he finally answered, looking rather proud of himself when I rolled my eyes.
• "I hate you," I replied, flipping him off, I wish he would take me seriously for just once. It feels like he thinks I'm still the little girl he grew up bickering with.
• "Love ya too, bestie," his voice was sarcastic, but my heart still skipped a beat at the mention of love, not that Jaxon would ever fall for me.
• "Shut up," I snapped, clenching my jaw to seem more annoyed than I really was. Here's the thing, Jaxon may be the most annoying person on planet Earth, but he's impossible to stay mad at. He's just so sweet. Sometimes.
• "Oooh somebody's in a mood,"
• "I swear Jaxon! Ugh!"
• "Okay, okay, I'm sorry," His hands were raised in mock surrender, which I rolled my eyes at, trying not to smile. He actually sounded sort of sorry, at least more sorry than usual. But that's not saying much, Jaxon is never really sorry.
• "Also, since when was I your 'bestie'?" I asked, over thinking every part of that statement. 'Does he really love me? Does he consider me a friend?' Ugh. So many questions I can't answer. The worst part is I'll never be able to answer them.
• "Eh, I wouldn't say 'bestie', but you count as a friend nowadays, child."
• "I'm not a child!"
• "You're younger than me, so technically you are, to me at least,"
• "You're impossible!"
• "I think that's the nicest thing you've ever said to me,". He was grinning stupidly, enjoying every moment of my annoyance.
• "Shut up, would you?" I asked, beginning to try and form an escape plan in my mind.
• "Make me," His voice was testy. Too testy.
• "Oh my- can you shut up for two seconds and let me think?!" Tears were forming in my eyes, but I blinked them back. He couldn't see me cry.
• "Jeez, maybe if you weren't so sensitive I wouldn't need to shut up!"
• "I'm sensitive?! Are you freaking serious right now?"
• "You're the one that's crying!"
• "Shut up! I am not!" That was a lie, a tear was rolling down my cheek as I said that. I'm so done with him. So done with this. I took a deep breath, pulling myself back together. Once my anger faded partially, I asked,
• "So, do you have an exit plan, like at all?"
• He looked at me for a moment, muttering something under his breath, then answering,
• "No. I don't, I would've told you if I did." His tone was tight and annoyed, as if he was the one who should be annoyed right now.
• "Well what do we do when they start attacking us? Or if the bomb goes off early?" I asked, trying to keep the panic rising within me out of my voice.
• "I don't know! You're the smart one, figure something out!"
• "That's what you should've done before you drug me into this mess!"
• "I did not 'drag' you into anything!"
• "You told me you had a plan, and you don't!"
• "An exit plan is NOT the same as a general plan!"
• "Ugh!"
• "You don't even have a plan, why should I?!"
• "No, I do have a plan. If we need to get the heck outta there we go for windows, they're only a couple feet up. Then we run, meet up in the old barn in the north corner of the attic," the plan was last minute, and nowhere near good. It would have to do though, we didn't have time to make a new one. Jaxon only nodded to acknowledge that he understood the plan. He reached over, wiping the tear that never finished falling from my cheek. I tried not to blush as he did, my skin feeling cold after his slight touch was gone.
• "Are you ready to wreck this joint kid?" He asked, his voice a little excited, but confident.
• "Nope. But I'm never gonna be ready, so let's do it while I'm at least a little ready," I replied, trying to give him a small smile, knowing this could be the last time I ever saw him.
• Tears formed in my eyes as it sunk in. I may never see him again, the man I had laughed, cried, screamed, and fought with. The man who knew me best, who had never left my side. This better not be the last time.
• Without thinking, I quickly wrapped my arms around him, pulling him into a tight hug, tears streaming down my face.
• "Aw, don't be like that or you'll make me cry too, kid," his voice was soft and sweet as he wrapped his strong arms around me. My skin was empty when he pulled back, a sooft, sad smile on his face.
• "Now let's get out of here before I start crying too, ya softie," he said with a chuckle, a single tear falling from his left eye. Giving him a gentle shove, I got up, then jumped off the roof we had been sitting on, Jaxon at my heels. I landed, the impact rattling the bones in my legs. Jaxon landed behind me, doing some fancy roll or whatever to break his fall. Show off. As he got up, I turned to him, giving him a nod, as if saying 'I'm ready' and that's when all hell broke loose.
