Irene's POV
"Mom! Do I really have to go? It's Joy's birthday party this weekend. I can't just not attend it, I promised to be there!" I followed my mother till we reach Dad's office.
"Joy would understand. Your grandma wont, not anymore." She made sure I hear her last words. Damn it!
"It's been what? Five years since you didn't visit her there." Mom said entering the room.
"Mom it's not like, she was not visiting us here. What would we even do there?!" I whined. "Dad!" I called out for help. He look at me before looking at mother, then I knew I had lost already.
"All of us will go sweetie." Dad stand up from his chair and greeting my mother with a kiss.
"Are you done? Dinner's ready." Mother asked him. Ugh!
I walked out of the room and made my way to the dining area, where my little sister's waiting for us already.
"You don't look good." She said as I sat across her.
"It's Joy's birthday." I said to her.
"I know that unnie but you know it's not really her Birthday, birthday. It'll just be an advance celebration. Come on unnie! You've never been back to the place we grew up to, since you were like 14? 15?" She said to me. "Plus, Grandma won't believe in whatever excuses you'll make again." I look at her.
"I'm not making up excuses!" I said.
"Yeah right! Tell that to yourself." she said, as she's looking at her phone now.
"What's happening here?" Mom and Dad took their seats and give the two of us questioning looks.
"Nothing mom. Let's eat?" Jimin said to them, after putting down her phone.
We ate dinner, planning for our trip this weekend. Since I can't oppose anymore, I just let them plan it out, while I'm being silent. Then after I went to my room already. The first thing I did was contact Joy and tell her I can't be there on Saturday.
"Oh! Jimin already told my sister about it." I heard Joy said on the other line. "I understand."
"I hope you didn't." I said. She laugh.
"Unnie. It's just for the weekend. Besides, it's your hometown right? What could go wrong?" A lot. "You've been avoiding going back there for years already, and it still confuses us why."
Joy's one of my closest friends here in the city, who have been constantly helping me make good excuses to not let me go back to my hometown. It's not that I hated the place, I just... I just think it's still not the right time to go back.
"What ever your reason is, Unnie. I think you need to set it aside, this time. I can tell you have no choice anymore." She said laughing. When have I ever given a choice?
"We'll still celebrate your birthday when I return." I said.
"And you'll pay for the expenses, unnie." She said teasing me.
"I won't"
"Okay. " She said giggling. "Have a good night sleep unnie. Oh! and have a fun weekend. Bye!" I said the same before hanging up.
I went to my closet and start getting clothes to pack. We'll just be there for 2 days. I will not be needing that much clothes and things to bring. It's not like we don't have a house there.
The next morning Jimin went to school, while mom and dad went to work. I am all alone in the house since I don't have class schedule today. Tomorrow is Saturday already. Here I'm wishing time would just stop and tomorrow will not come. but I guess that's just the same as wishing that the earth would just vanish today.
The whole day I was just working on some school stuffs that needed to be done. Then Jimin arrived, started disturbing me in my room, and basically hauling my closet.
"My clothes are too small for you Jimin-ah. Why do you keep getting stuffs from me?"
"Your flannel"
"You already got almost all of it. I kept buying one for myself. Where even are they? I haven't seen you wear some of it again." I said to her. She then nervously laugh.
"About those..." She said.
"I always forgot and left it at Minjeong's place." With what I heard I throw my pen at her.
"You bitch! You left all of it at her place!? Why would you even leave that much clothes there?!"
"Unnie."
"I want all of my flannel back! You bring them back Jimin. Or I'll be telling Mom and Dad everything you don't want me to tell them." I said as a threat.
"You won't do that" She said nervously.
"I will" I said and walk my way to my bathroom.
"Then I will also tell them the reason why you always refuse to go back to our hometown." She said that made me stop. I turn to face her.
"You don't know a thing." I said to her.
"I know a certain girl named Kang Seulgi." That's when I think my soul just left my body.
Hearing that name again made me feel goosebumps. God.
"I'm sure they'll be much more interested about it." How did she even knew about her?
"I don't know what you're talking about Jimin."
"Unnie you can't hide it anymore. Your expression says it all." she said to me. I look at her seriously.
"How did you know her?" I saw how she stopped smiling and just look at me, the moment I asked it. She hit a spot.
"Oh my God! She really is the reason! You were the other person!" she pointed at me as if she just fixed a whole puzzle. "I can't believe this!" she laugh a little saying that. She looks excited about it. What does she know? And where?
I shake my head and run to my bathroom.
I look at myself in the mirror, next thing I did was splash some water on my face.
"Unnie!" I heard her call for me. "Just to assure you, I will not tell them." After she said that, I heard silence.
I washed my face with water again, hoping the nervousness I feel right now to be washed away. I felt my face getting hot. Next thing I know I can feel my eyes producing tears already.
I dropped on the tiled floor, in my bathroom, and cry my heart out. It's the first time in years that I cried like this again.
"I'm so sorry, Seul. I really am."
