Section 1: The portal?
Avery's PerspectiveLet me tell you a story, my lovely grandchildren. Once upon a time there was a girl that was born in a world filled with magical creatures. With birds with multiple wings and fruit that was gold or color changing.
"Gramma, What's the girl's name?," Jack asked.
"Well, her name is Verdi," Grandma replies.
"Isn't that your name, grandma?" I ask. "Well Yes."
"Are you insinuating that you are from another dimension?" I question.
"Woah, those are mighty, big words for a five year old, Avery." Grandma mentioned. "Let me continue my story..." my grandma continues. Now, it is time for me to tell you my story. Hello, I'm Avery, Avery Jane Laiceps (Lay/a/seps). I am currently 15 years old. Born December 16, 1998. Everyone says I'm extremely mature but I really like girly things. My favorite color is hot pink and unicorns fascinate me still. However, my favorite hobby is reading. I do everything like; dancing, karate, singing, and a bunch of AP classes at school but reading tops the charts easily. I taught myself how to read at age four and I'd study dictionaries so that I could read "grown up books' ' (they were just textbooks). Otherwise, I definitely I'm a sore thumb when I walk out into public because I have natural jet black, wavy hair that goes down to my knees and I am five foot, nine inches. I value my hair more than my sanity.
Meanwhile, I'm in my room packing my stuff up in a vintage suitcase. Nicely, I folded the clothes and extra supplies I would need for the trip. My family is visiting my grandmother, on our mom's side, who lives in New York. Grandma usually visits us but this time we are coming to her. So, this adventure is extremely important. This will be the first time I go to New York and I am excited. So, a common urge that typically reveals its appearance when a person is on the verge of traveling. Therefore, I'm experiencing the feeling like I'm missing something essential for this adventure. Nevertheless, this emotion of uneasiness I could not bear anymore, so, I searched around the room and spotted my photo album on a cushioned chair connected to my window that displayed a perfect view of the neighborhood. I forgot to return it to the right place under the sofa where there were drawers. So, I arose from my soft mattress; prancing to the photo album, I gently lifted the memorable and figuratively fragile album and skimmed through the pages. I carefully brought the book back to my pink sheeted bed, and gracefully covered the book up with a bunch of clothes and shoes.
Although this did not completely satisfy my anxieties and it is so unnecessary, I feel that I should take it with me. Maybe, I could show it to my Grandma. I placed both hands on each corner of the case and brought the lid down to squeeze the case shut. Tightly, I lock the locks abruptly before it bursts out again. After, I skipped downstairs carrying the heavy case to mom who was struggling with a bus load of all our cases. Therefore, it was hard to witness mom slowly plunge the car with the trillions of suitcases packed to the brim with clothes, toothbrushes, hair tools and more, single-handedly.
My mother's name is Ally Laiceps, my friends call her, "Avery's mom." Our last name is complicated to read, remember, and it's apparently a challenge to say. So, guess the easiest option is to say, Avery's mom. When my mom says, " just call me Ally," that's how I know she likes or accepts that my new friend's existence is a part of mine. Consequently, I drop my suitcase causing it to bounce on the surface of the sidewalk. Sprinting towards mom, I heroically catch a stubborn case. I put the case on the soft floor of the trunk. However, my train of sight moves towards Stellaluna, my childhood friend, who is currently leaning on the thick bushes of our yard closest to the car. Around the perimeter of our enormous house are thick, seven feet tall shrubs. In front of the house the bush stops for the driveway. Anyway, she must be waiting for me. Not long later I noticed her grayish blue eyes sternly staring into my soul. Usually, her eyes sparkle in the glistening sunlight, but right now it's filled with impatient fear. What happened!?
"The... THE... um, the secret girl hideout is in shambles!" Stellaluna hollers.
"The WHAT?!"Oh yeah, the secret girl hideout." I finally caught on. The name, secret girl hideout, was invented by our 8 year old minds and it has stuck for 7 years because we didn't want to think of a better name.
After the bushes break by the driveway, a stone tile path leads to a circular enclosed area where you can sit and chill on stone seats by our garden. Well, there's this one place where you can walk into the bush and there is an open cave of leaves and twigs. Stellaluna and I figured this out at a young age. We went there to play imaginary games about super spies and secret government agencies. Eventually, it turned into a place where we read and studied. Now, it is a museum of fond memories and a place to escape from the world. I haven't been there in a while but I'm assuming Stellaluna has. Stellaluna is like a sister to me because she has kind of always been there. Her parents are always at work but right now their best excuse currently, is that her mother is in labor in another state.
"Those douches! Must have broken in and vandalized your property," Stellaluna spews out angrily. Those douches she refers to are the neighborhood thugs, Payton and Cody. They bullied us in Kindergarten and they haven't matured a bit since. I don't think they ever will. So, frustratingly they are a possibility, because they're always trying to unbalance our live's equilibrium. However, I highly doubt it this time, it was probably a mild windstorm.
"Stellaluna, you're putting out that it is a house..."-"AVERY! I have a question for you! Are you going to draw on the plane?" Jack asked.
Moreover, Jack is my brother, who isn't even a year younger than me. Therefore, my mother assumes we are the same age. Since mom gave up on being able to tell a difference between our ages, we do everything together. To illustrate, we are in the same grade at school. My mom enrolled him when he was barely five years old to give him a head start, hoping his "brain will blossom like your sisters"/ me. My family is absolutely amazing though and I am proud to be a part of it.
The light wind blew the papers out of Jack's hand and the papers flew across the soft breeze. I retrieve some of the rampant pages for him and reply, "Sorry Jack, no thanks, I'll just stick to my books."
I start heading to the "secret girls hideout" to witness for myself the "absolute disaster" because honestly, I think Stellaluna is just exaggerating. She is extremely dramatic. It's hard to believe her that something actually went wrong.
"Hey, where are you going?" Jack questions.
"Oh, I'm just checking up on something," I reply.
"Well then I'm coming with you because I am bored and want to do something active." Jack states.
I entered the leafy chamber, and everything was destroyed! This was not any storm. People must have done this. I'm furious, my fists clench and my face grows red, filled with rage. This place is filled with amazing memories and they're temerity damages these precious moments. However, all that anger dissipates when I saw the most beautiful thing. Jack gasps in astonishment. As I stare at a door-sized, floating, sparkling oval, I wonder if it could be a portal to another dimension. As I stood gazing at this marvelous sight, mesmerized by its beauty. Jack came walking closer and a rock that was beneath him made him trip. It was as if the thing was swallowing him up. His torso disappeared from sight into the bright, sparkly portal (I'm assuming). All within a millisecond, I stretch forth my hand to catch Jack. However, he takes me with him and we both get engulfed. It was like falling off a ledge. I leave this world with a scream.
As the sparkles brush over my face, I discover I couldn't see Jack anymore. After a little bit of floating deeper and deeper into the portal, my mom started searching for us. She heard my scream and followed the sound commanding Stellaluna to stay where she was at. Stellaluna was in shock by my shriek and had no idea what was happening because she stayed behind. Mom raced into the hideout and found herself face to face with the raging portal. Knowing that she needed to go in, the next thing she knew was that she was diving in to save us with half of the cases in her hand still.
It felt like an hour going through the portal. It was like I was underwater stuck between raging bubbles as I swirled through an endless pool of sparkles but I could still breathe. The portal was like a tunnel and I was going at the speed of a rollercoaster, it was hard to see because it was so bright. Then suddenly, I landed butt first on top of Jack. He swiftly pushed me off and squirmed out of the way, mentally traumatized. Unlike me, Jack landed on a golden brick pathway.
"Ugh, that'll leave a mark," He rubs his sore bum. Curiously, we studied around us the green forest that was surrounding the gold path. We knew where we were not at home.
"Oh no we are in the middle of nowhere", Jack announces.
