- Prologue -

Hyun Ji's POV

"What do you mean I can't go?" I bellowed, tears beginning to form in my eyes.

"I'm sorry honey, I didn't expect the tickets to be that expensive," my mum answered.

I followed her to the other side of the kitchen, "Mum, I worked my ass off. You said if I passed all of my exams you would let me go to Korea and visit grandma!"

My mum put down the chicken and turned to face me. "Jessica-"

"DO NOT CALL ME THAT!" I yelled at her. Ever since my mum married Steven, a white man, after my dad died in a car accident, she's become so white-washed she never does anything Korean or call me by my official name, Hyun Ji. When we moved to the States after she got married, she gave me an American name and gave up our entire culture.

"Je- Hyun Ji, we just can't afford to pay for your ticket. If you want to go, you'll just have to work and pay for your own," she replied.

"I might as well move out. I'm already 18 and that means you don't fucking own me anymore!" I answered back.

My mum put down the chicken she was marinating and looked me straight in the eye, "If we don't own you anymore, then you can move out. That means you'll have to pay everything by yourself."

I threw my hands up in frustration, "AS IF THAT ISN'T WHAT I'VE BEEN DOING FOR 2 YEARS! I've been working for the past 2 years and I come home at 10, or sometimes even 11 and you don't even question where I've been or concerned if I'm okay. You've left me to grow up by myself."

I knew if I stayed in her sight, one of us was going to end up with a bruise.

"I'm going to my room."

"Hyun Ji.."

I ignored her and made my way up the stairs, stomping each step violently to emphasize that I was clearly pissed.

As I reached the top of the stairs, my mum yelled from the kitchen, "I'm sorry!" she apologized in Korean, "Come down for dinner in half an hour!"

Psh, trying to use Korean to mess with me, nice try. I thought.

"I've suddenly lost my appetite," I said in the coldest tone I could muster.

With that, I slammed my door so hard, the house was on the verge of falling down.
