The clinic

The mines are the worst place on Earth, decided Harvey at precisely 2:30 pm on the 10th of Spring. The last thing he'd expected when he went to work that morning was his beloved farmer collapsing in his arms. It'd been a relatively calm day, with only a few patients coming in for the common cold. Spring allergies and all.

So when he went back to his office in order to finalize some patient's paperwork and he heard the door immediately open, he sighed, moving to put his papers down and greet the person. What he didn't expect was his life partner to come trudging in, face downcast. "Hey honey," He said, more cheerful knowing it was Nil. "What are you doing at the clinic?"

Nil curled farther in on themselves, and it was then he noticed their ripped up clothes and matted hair. "Love?" He faltered, approaching Nil and taking their face into his hands. His eyebrows furrowed at the state of them. They finally looked up at Harvey, a sheepish smile struggling to make an appearance on their face.

They struggled to speak, their arms curling tighter around their stomach as they tried. It was then Harvey noticed the blood. "H-hey.. Harv." They mumbled, eyes struggling to stay open. Their head dropped out of Harvey's hand and onto his shoulder, the groggy movement barely registered by the panicking doctor. "You 'member all that talk 'bout the mines being dangerous?" They muttered, even quieter than before. Harvey's arms wrapped around Nil protectively, a sudden understanding throwing him for a loop.

"Oh. Oh no-" He started, looking down at Nil's torn up face. Their eyes closed, body beginning to go limp as they muttered one last thing.

"..Sorry.."

"Shit," Harvey whispered, beginning to gather Nil up into his arms. "Shit. Shit. Fuck."

Waiting for them to wake up was the worst part. Treating them was bad, but at least he had to stay focused on the task at hand. Waiting, however. He had nothing but his thoughts to keep him company. He and Nil's current setup was.. A bit unprofessional, but the only thing Harvey cared about at the moment was their safety and comfort.

The door to Harvey's old apartment slowly cracked open, Maru sticking her head in. "They doin' ok? They've been out of it for.."  She looked down to check her watch. "Gosh, about 3 hours."

Harvey simply nodded, his leg bouncing a million miles a minute. He hadn't taken his eyes off of Nil for all three hours they'd been passed out. They worried him with the way they didn't seem to have much regard for their own safety. "There anything I can get for you?"

"Um.." He started, unable to think with his lover unconscious like this in front of him. "A glass of water? Maybe 2 actually. And some crackers for when Nil wakes up?" He tore his eyes away from them for the first time since they passed out to silently thank Maru. She'd stayed extra late at the clinic to make sure Nil was safe. She'd always been a good employee, but in staying late this one time she'd secured a special place in Harvey's heart as one of his best friends. She nodded, turning to grab two glasses of water and some of the clinics tasteless crackers.

He turned back to Nil, taking their hand in his own. He pressed his lips to their bruised knuckles, his head dropped down on the bed. "Oh honey..." He muttered, more to himself than anyone. His cheek pressed against the blankets when his head turned to look at Nil's unconscious face. "You really need to stop doing this."

His voice came even quieter this time, the tiniest hint of tears pricking at his eyes as he gazed at Nil's closed eyes. The door to the old apartment creaked open again, and Maru walked in. "Here you go, Harvey." She said, handing him the water and crackers.

He pulled his hand away from Nil's to take the items and place them on the bedside table. He rubbed at his eyes, exhaustion now making itself apparent. "Maru why don't you head home." He mumbled. "I don't want your dad to worry."

"You sure?" She placed a comforting hand on his back, rubbing in small circles. "They're my friend too, and I'd hate for you to have to leave their side to get something." Harvey smiled weakly.

"You're a sweet person Maru. But yes, I'm sure." He looked up, seeing the concern in her face. "You've stayed here late enough as is, and I don't think I have the energy to deal with your dad if you're home past dark." He chuckled, turning back to Nil.

"Alright Harvey." She relented, handing her papers for the day to him. She placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "If you or Nil need anything, you have my number."

"Yeah..."

It felt like an eternity of sitting there next to Nil, occasionally dozing off as it got later and later. the silence in the room was deafening. It wasn't until about 12 am that they finally stirred from their sleep. "..Harvey?" The sound of their tried, quiet voice filled the room, causing Harvey to shoot up in his seat.

"Nil!" He shot forward, wrapping his arms around them, who despite not knowing what was happening, gratefully buried their face into Harvey's shoulder. "Honey you had me so fucking worried, what were you thinking??" He mumbled into Nil's shoulder, tears filling his eyes in earnest.

A weak chuckle squeaked past their lips. "Well that's the first time I've heard you swear in months." They breathed, clutching at Harvey's shirt. "..Was it that bad?"

Harvey's grip on Nil tightened, tears beginning to fall down his cheeks. "Love, you could have died." He quavered, taking a moment to compose himself. He backed out of the heartfelt hug, taking both of Nil's hands in his. "You're lucky to have made it to the clinic.

His voice, so much smaller than Nil had heard it in a long time, broke their heart in two. They sat up slowly, gathering Harvey's face in their hands and rubbing their thumbs over his deep eye bags. "What time is it?" They asked, softly.

Harvey huffed out a sigh of relief, turning his face into Nil's hand. "It's about 12 am." He mumbled into their calloused palm. "I haven't left you alone since this afternoon."

Nil leaned forward to place chaste kisses on Harvey's face. First his cheeks, then his nose and forehead, then every other inch of his face. They leaned forward to press their foreheads together. "Well I'm awake now, aren't I?"

He huffed out a half-hearted laugh. "Yes dear, I suppose you are."

"Now let's get you home, ok?"

1109 words. Hallo. We're gonna pretend that this wasn't posted at 4:35 in the morning and that I didn't hyperfocus on this when I was supposed to be sleeping, m'kay? I'm sorry I just really like Harvey-

P.S. This was based on the dialogue "Hi honey, what are you doing at the clinic? Oh you just came to see me? That's nice."
