"he will be here." harley reminded herself. she brushed off her dress again although there wasn't anything on it and it was practically wrinkle free. she looked around again but no sign of him."hey pretty lady!" she heard from down the street and began to feel discomfort waiting outside the drive-in alone.
"come on dal." she whispered to herself again.
when another fifteen minutes passed she went in and sat down. she kicked a few rocks at the people in-front of her and played dumb when they turned around. when forty-five minutes past she came to the conclusion he wasn't coming. holding her tears in trying not to cry she exited the drive-in looking up. what did she expect from dallas winston anyways? when she arrived home she fell on the couch not even bothering to take her shoes off. she didn't feel like acknowledging what had happened and instead closed her eyes and fell asleep.
____
she awoke to banging on her front door. groaning she sat up and opened the door to a sweaty and disheveled looking dallas. she wanted to roll her eyes and slam the door in his face but unfortunately he had already made his way inside closing the door behind him.
"hey harley do you mind if i hide out in here for a bit. i didn't do nothing major just a bit of pre-rumble shenanigans."
harley rolled her eyes. "you're joking. so what you've spent all day slashing tires?"
"yeah, that and some other stuff but i'm pretty sure no one saw me." he said smiling back on his previous work. "what are you all dressed up for anyways?"
the girl's jaw dropped in disbelief. "you're actually joking. god i don't know why i thought you might have changed."
"what the hell are you on about?" dally said standing up furrowing his brows.
"do you remember why we were never close until now? because your always pulling shit like this. i guess i was stupid to think you would put spending time with me over spending time in a jail sell."
dally didn't say a word.
"sure dal stay here as long as you want." the girl said walking towards the front door placing her hand on the handle before turning her head back around, "and by the way, i'm dressed up for our date. you know? the one you didn't show up to."
"fuck. harley!" dally called out but she was already out the door.
he stood up ready to sprint after her but to his surprise he found her sitting on the porch her head in her hands. "harley." he said softly sitting next to her. "i really didn't remember and i'm so sorry."
"why would you? it's not like you're my boyfriend. i shouldn't expect you to prioritize anything over your reputation anyhow." harley mumbled still keeping her head down.
"that's bullshit harley. i don't care about my reputation. well maybe a little. but i care about you and the gang more and i promise you that." dally didn't lie. although he wasn't sure why he felt that way. he had never prioritized a girl before.
"yeah well you're kinda shit at showing it." harley said finally sitting up. her eyes were red from crying and she was still wiping tears away with her palms.
"i know harls." he said slouching a bit so harley could rest her head on his shoulder. he threw an arm around her and twirled the ends of her hair between his fingers.
"come on." he announced suddenly grabbing harleys hand and pulling her up.
___
"dally where are we going?" harley laughed as he pulled her through the streets both of them running. they came to a sliding stop in-front of the dingo.
"damnit it's closed."
"you didn't know?" harley giggled watching the brunette boy run his free hand through his hair and look around. "alright my turn." she said keeping her grip on his hand and pulling him away again.
they ran until they reached a small diner on the west side. greasers typically didn't show up because it was filled with socs but it happened to be harley's mom's second job. "come on lets sneak through the back." she said sneaking around the side of the building knocking at the back door.
"hey kiddo." one of ms. valentine's friends said smiling at the girl.
"can we sneak in? i don't want trouble with any socs." she asked politely.
"of course! what do you want? ill bring it out here for ya."
"two cokes and an order of fries please."
"i'm on it." she said closing the back door leaving dally and harley outside.
"why do you have so many connections on the west side?" dally smirked sitting against the side of the building.
"my mom works here." she smiled sitting next to him. "it's nice back here though. i like observing people over the fence." the two of them sat facing a chicken wire fence. the other side of the fence showed a clear view of a street buzzing with socs driving mustangs or socs who wished they were driving mustangs. you could tell a lot by the way they walked and sometimes harley could find herself eavesdropping in on their conversations.
the two people watched while waiting for their food but harley found it hard to focus on the people. was this how it was gonna be? what happened to a honeymoon phase where everything was happy? harley didn't want to spend everyday wondering if dally even liked her, but that was who dally was and she needed to except that. they were never gonna be perfect. she used to judge other people's relationships, she used to hug evie when she was crying over something steve did and think 'wow just brake up with him' but she was starting to get that now.
a/n: please please don't take this as romanticizing toxic relationships. you deserve so much love <33
