"Why can't you just listen to me for once?!"
My floppy ears lifted and processed a heated argument from the living room. Here they go again. 3...2...1... Soon the baby, Ally, was wailing, right on cue. I rolled over from the side of my small bedding and stretched, hearing the satisfying clicks of my bones. I wagged my sleepy tail and padded over to push her cot at a steady rhythm. Soon her cries dulled into soft breathing again. I exited the twilight blue room and ate my dry, tasteless pellet breakfast, which varied between too much and too little every day. My masters kept on arguing.
"You can't expect me to take care of the kid and that useless dog every single day! I have work five days a week!" My male master, Hank, slammed his fists on the wooden countertop, his coffee mug accidentally spilling over.
"So what? Do you expect me to clean up after you now?" She glared.
"It was an-"
"Oh just forget it." Jade huffed and turned around to retrieve the mop. Hank stared into space not knowing whether to leave or help.
I lost interest and was about to go check on Ally again when a wave of dizziness hit me. I was getting another vision.
There was a scream and I saw her feet slip on the coffee stained tiles.
No! I barked and made as much noise as I could to divert their attention to me. She frowned at me, but kept going. No no no this isn't working...she's still heading for it!
AsJade's foot was inches away from the spilt coffee, Hank snapped out of it and pulled her into a hug.
"I'm sorry. I don't want to fight. We'll figure something out."
"Fine," She smiled. "But you're getting the mop." They headed out together.
Whew. Crisis adverted. Then I heard an all too familiar click.
"You've been barking too much and waking Ally up. I'm afraid you'll have to spend the night outside." Hank patted my head, my chain leash in his other hand.
That night I was cold and felt like the loneliest I've ever been. Exhaustion reached deep down into my bones. Even though my masters may lose themselves when they're angry, I never blame them. Along with Ally, they'll always be my family.
I was drifting off from this world when something teared me back. My ears pricked up and detected something rustling in the tall, drooping grass. My nose sniffed and picked up the scent of a poisonous beast I had dreaded my whole life. A Darkpelt! It had bulbous, adorable eyes, but I had learned years ago that looks can be deceiving the hard way. I panicked but it grew even more as I realised Hank forgot to close the back door. The small, tailless, monkey-like bundle of brown fluff scampered towards the opening and disappeared. A wave of nausea attacked my head as the vision flashed.Stop it. I had to concentrate on freeing myself. Realising the chain was corroded halfway through, I clamped my jaws hard on the chain and cracks appeared. The taste it left on my tongue was disgusting but I bit again and it finally came free. My vet's going to have a nightmare.
I rushed into Ally's room to see the Darkpelt lowered on Ally's crib, just as the vision showed before, ready to pounce. I barked and immediately chased it to a corner, accidentally knocking Ally's cot over in the process. The beast's beady eyes glinted as it managed to swipe at me and draw blood on my snout, before I went in for the kill. I rushed back Ally crying on the floor, about to comfort her when the lights came on.
As Jade screamed, I realised the beast just wanted to eat the baby food left on Ally's clothes.
As Hank stomped towards me, I also realised blood was dripping all over Ally's sleeves while she flailed around.
As I was thrown in the belly of a foul smelling mechanical beast, I realised I would never see them again. A sense of dread followed me as I was no doubt heading to the pound.

I yawned and stretched my limbs, feeling stiff as I took in my surroundings. I was housed in a cramped, dark and uncomfortable cage and let out a long breath. All of the past events came rushing back and I still hoped my family would come back for me. I would wait my whole life if I had to.
My head suddenly throbbed and I realised whatever poisonous disease the ferret passed through my wound was making me feel weaker. I barely registered my family rushing towards me as Ally happily squealed my name. Her first word. I smiled and closed my eyes and thought back to my first master, who raised me, knew and appreciated my hidden 'talent'. Who forgave me when he died of a poisonous Darkpelt bite, even though he knew I could've prevented it. I called up memories of his kind and crinkled face, his warm laugh and pinecone scent. I sniffed again. It was getting stronger. I opened my eyes and saw him standing in front of me.
He smiled again.
