Anika woke up to the sound of voices-Wilbur's and Niki's. Looking up blearily at the clock, she noticed it was 4 am. What were Wilbur and Niki doing at this time of the morning? She crept down the stairs, peeking around the corner. Wilbur was draped across the living room chair, looking like a cat. Niki was standing, but she was still as tall as Wilbur when he was sitting. "I don't want war, Will," Niki snapped, hands folded across her chest.
"You know how the Dream Team is, Niki. They don't give up. You want independence too, don't you? It's very annoying to have them not let us have freedom! Also, if we just give up like that, it makes all our efforts fruitless and makes us look weak," Wilbur argued, honey-brown eyes gleaming in the dim light.
"Yes, I get it. But if we go to war, who knows what will happen? Death, destruction, bombs, torturing, and much more! I am NOT letting Anika get exposed to that dangerous environment!" Niki whisper-shouted, a frown tugging at her lips as her eyes narrowed into little slits. Wilbur sighed, pushing his brown curls away from his face. He looked tired and wizened, eyes dazed and unfocused, like one of a general overlooking battle arrangements. "I know you care about Anika, Niki. I do too! But we're losing people. We NEED you there, Niki. Please, just think about it. For once, Niki," Wilbur pleaded, adjusting the blue uniform he wore. Niki's fists had clenched at the mention of Eret and she let out an angry growl as she turned away from Will. Anika craned her neck to see what was going on better. Even though Mum's face showed absolutely no emotion, Anika could hear her brain whirring, mentally listing down the pros and cons. Niki had only heard the word war once. A whisper in the crowd. Niki had let her go out to buy some flour with Wilbur, and she had heard it. As she walked past the crowds, she noticed that they looked nervous and some were packing up, as if ready to leave. There was one resounding word that entered her ears, like an unwanted enemy-war. The next day, they went underground, and now and again, she would hear loud banging noises. But they were fireworks as Mum had said, weren't they? The word war doesn't sound very important or urgent. So why on earth were Mum and Wilbur arguing about it at this time of the night? Anika's attention was averted to Mum again as Niki turned around and sighed. A defeated sigh. "Fine. Fine. But, if I join, you need to promise me that Anika will be safe," Niki gave in, throwing herself down on the chair opposite Wilbur's. Wilbur beamed and smiled. "I swear we'll keep Anika safe," he swore, "but she'll have to move into the war zone. But, most likely, nothing bad will happen to her."
"If she's getting in the filthy hands of the Dream Team, I'm killing you," Niki joked, the tense atmosphere calming down a little. Wilbur sighed and ran a hand through his hair, messing up the brown curls even more. Before she could hear more of the conversation, Niki stood. "I'll go check on Anika," she said. Upon hearing this, Anika ran up to her room quietly, her heart pounding. She knew she'll probably get in trouble for eavesdropping. Throwing her blankets around her, she clutched at her pillow and pretended to be asleep. Soft footsteps padded into the room, and a soft kiss was pressed onto her forehead before leaving. "Good night dear," Niki whispered, before closing the door.
