Czar sat frozen for about five minutes, staring at the ultrasound picture without saying a word. I wasn't sure what I expected his reaction to be, but it definitely wasn't this.
"Czar, say something," I urged.
The waitress returned with my muffin and his bottle of water, placing them in front of us. He didn't even flinch.
"Czar." I snapped my fingers in front of his face.
He blinked a few times before looking up at me. "Y-You're pregnant?"
"Yes."
"And it's mine?"
I rolled my eyes. "Of course."
He stared at the sonogram again. "I... I can't believe this. I'm going to be a dad." Slowly, a smile spread across his face. "Oh my God, I'm going to be a dad!"
"Yes, yes you are." I giggled.
"I'm going to have a son!"
"Whoa, slow down. We don't know the gender yet."
"Oh please, I know it's going to be a boy."
We laughed as I started picking at my muffin.
"How long have you known?" he asked.
"Two weeks. I would've called you sooner, but... I was afraid."
"You should've called. I would've answered. This past month without you was hell. I didn't realize how much I loved you until you were gone. I don't ever want to feel that again."
Tears welled up in my eyes.
"Sorry, pregnancy hormones," I said, wiping at them.
He reached across the table and gently wiped my cheek. "I missed you."
"I missed you too," I whispered.
We spent the next hour catching up. After our drinks, we took a short walk, talking about everything we'd missed. I told him about my upcoming boutique, and he beamed with pride. He confessed that he'd secretly attended all of my recent fashion shows, just to see how I was doing. I couldn't help but find that endearing.
Eventually, we ended up in front of a little ice cream shop, my idea, of course. I ordered a chocolate-vanilla swirl, and Czar stuck with plain vanilla. As we walked back to our cars, I felt the ache in my feet. They were beginning to swell, and my small baby bump had already started to show.
"So, when can I come by and help you pack up your things?" Czar asked as he leaned against my car.
"When we buy a new house," I replied, watching for his reaction.
"What?"
"I'm not moving back into that huge house. I want something smaller, something that feels like home. Only then will I move back in with you."
He rolled his eyes but opened my car door anyway.
"I'll think about it," he smirked.
"Oh, whatever," I laughed, settling into the seat.
He shut the door and leaned down to kiss me through the open window. I melted into it.
"I've got some things to handle, but I'll come by later tonight."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
And just like that, we were finding our way back to each other.
