Game Gone Wrong

--

Percy POV

The crowds cheered loudly as we came out onto the field in a straight line, fully geared up and holding our helmets in one hand.

We went over to our bench and started warming up.

My eyes flitted over to the cheerleaders who were practicing their routine. Our school had decided to send cheerleaders over to cheer us on. But that meant Drew was there. I saw her. She was staring at me with sad eyes, her black hair tied into a tight ponytail. I instantly looked away, not wanting to waste my energy on her anymore. I wasn't angry that she cheated anymore. I was just hurt and disappointed. I had known her for so long, and she had decided to throw it all away.

I would never admit it to her or anyone else, but I guess I just sorta missed her. I missed the days when we used to laugh and talk over ice cream. I just missed the old Drew. But I knew I had to let her go. She would never go back to how she used to be, and we would never go back to how we used to be.

It was time to move on.

"Jackson, are you sure you can do this?" Coach Hedge asked, coming over. "I know you're on chemo."

"I'll be fine," I insisted.

I was feeling a little queasy, but I had stopped throwing up which I guess was a good thing.

I noticed Annabeth smiling at me from above, so I smiled back.

"Okay! Listen up Cupcakes!" Coach Hedge started giving us a pep talk, and I dozed off, trying to stop my stomach from churning.

"Jackson?" Hedge asked, snapping me back to reality.

"Hm?"

"I asked if you wanted to talk to them," Hedge repeated.

I nodded. "Okay, guys..."

Annabeth POV

The stands were packed.

The Championship was a big game, and everyone had come to watch.

"It's ridiculously hot out here," Silena said, fanning her face.

We were sitting way too close together for the weather.

Sally saw Hermes and waved at him. He smiled and waved back.

Percy was out on the field, giving the team a pep talk before they cheered their team name and ran out to the field.

Percy started with the ball, passing it to Jason as they tossed it back and forth.

A player immediately collided with Percy, tackling him for the ball.

He crashed down. Hard. He kept his grip on the ball, quickly throwing it backwards which surprised the player.

He got the ball back and the home team's line backer leapt up into the air behind him, pulling him down as all the other players ran for him. He ended under 3 players in total.

The crowd gasped. I covered my mouth in horror. That looked bad. Silena sucked in a sharp breath. Grover turned pale.

I kept watching as the players slowly climbed off of him and all of his teammates rushed around him, Jason pulling him up and talking to him for a second. He was back on his feet in seconds, but I could see him rub his chest gently before continuing play.
