Lucifer couldn't believe what was happening; Rory is asking him to leave; is asking him to promise that he wouldn't change anything. He knows his calling feels right, but promising to abandon his child feels wrong . He wanted to do right by their daughter and agree to what she's currently asking, but it doesn't make sense.

"Aurora, I love you, and I want you to stay as you are, but I am not leaving. Your mother is right; we all have a choice. And this is the choice I'm making. I'm sorry."

Rory nods. She understands her Dad's choice. She remembered what her future mom told Ella when said forensic scientist came ranting about her own teenage kids one night.

"Doing what's best for your child doesn't always make them happy."

She had to admit she was disappointed with Lucifer's decision, but perhaps it's a good thing; she has to trust that it is.

They walk hand in hand in Lux and sit on the piano bench. Chloe looks concerned — she's worried yet elated that Lucifer chose to stay — and her partner of six years shares the same sentiment, except he's not regretting any word he said to Rory.

"Are you sure about this?"

Lucifer looks at Chloe and touches her belly, "I'm certain I don't want to leave and let you raise our daughter alone," He takes her hand in his and continues, "It's not a blip for either of us, Chloe. It'll be thousands of years for me and perhaps some forty or fifty years for you. My point is, no matter how long I stay down there to help the souls ascend, their numbers won't dwindle because there are seven billion and counting people on Earth, and I'm just one hot Devil,"

Lucifer pauses, and Chloe chuckles, giving her boyfriend's hand a gentle squeeze.

"I'll get my siblings on board, have them share the workload. Everything will work out, Detective."

"I'm sure it will."

Nine months later, the married couple is making their way to the hospital. There were minor changes, like Rory having a twin brother, but all others seem the same (Lucifer and Chloe wouldn't know what other changes happened apart from the additional bundle of joy), and they couldn't be any happier.

Chloe had to undergo C-section to deliver the twins, and after a few hours of being in a groggy state, she's finally, fully awake to witness the scene before her:

With his eyes closed, Lucifer is holding Rory and Zain on his chest, seemingly whispering promises to them in another language. But she knows it's along the lines of 'i love you's' and 'i'll always be here for you'.

Her husband looks up then when he hears her sigh, and even though she wasn't able to take a photo of it, it will be forever etched on her mind just how much love he has not only for his children but for her and Trixie as well

"Are they ok?"

"More than ok, my love." He walks over to the side of the hospital bed and bends slightly so Chloe can take the closest twin — Rory — while Lucifer grabs a chair and rearranges Zain so that his wife can see his face. "They're perfect," The devil adds.

"Is Trixie coming?"

"Yes, first thing tomorrow, I'll take her here before dropping her off at school."

"Thanks, babe. Is Jophiel doing ok with his shift?"

"Oh, he has ways to go, let me tell you. But he'll get there. He has to, or Amena-God won't allow him back in the club."

"Oh, right. He loves being in Lux."

"I'm just glad he hasn't found my other vintage liquor stash, ugh. Anyway, why don't you rest more, love?"

"I'm good," The former Detective yawns as she bops Rory's nose, and the baby moves and turns her head away as if it was annoyed with the gesture.

Lucifer chuckles and says, "Oh, just like you did that one time I touched your nose," eliciting a laugh from his wife as she replays the scene in her head.

Meanwhile, a lone figure stands and smiles at the couple and their children outside the hospital room. It's the adult Rory from the future with designer goth clothes — has better control of her powers, has an annoying brother, a doting father, a strict yet firm mother — different somehow yet the same and now appreciates how Lucifer chose a different path and made everything better.

Future Rory walks down the hallway and disappears as Lucifer comes by the door to see if anyone is there because he thought someone was watching. When he's satisfied that there is, in fact, no one and nothing to see, he closes the door and goes back to where he previously was.

The Decker-Morningstar couple still isn't sure what the future holds, but they know they will make it as long as they're together—partners forever, in every sense of the word.

Notes:

Two things: 1) I love this photo, and, 2) The song "You're Still the One" has those lines that kind of inspired the way this short story went, and of course, the title. The specific lines from the song that I like is "I'm glad we didn't listen, look at what we would be missing".

Hope you like this one. Thank you!
