Denise's P.o.v:
My gaze followed a butterfly which was flying unhindered above and around me. I smiled when I felt the soft grass caressing my ankles and looked upwards. The weather seemed nice even though a few clouds gathered to cover the sun. The wind was blowing lightly and a few strands of hair tickled my cheeks. This place was quiet. I liked it. Even though I didn't know where this place was. I whistled and in the close distance, I heard children laughing. I didn't belong to this place. I knew it. But I had to do something. Despite the curse being broken, I felt like there was a space in the story that I left empty. Maybe the probation wasn't over. Everything that happened inside the temple was completely surreal. And this place was no exception. The noise became louder and I stumbled backwards when someone bumped into me. His little whimper melted my heart. It was a little boy. He quickly stood up from the ground and picked the ball.
Boy: *he bowed his head politely* I apologize lady!
He then turned around and ran back to his companions. He looked about 5 or 6 years old. With dark hair and brown eyes, round face, pale skin, chubby cheeks and a sweet smile, he looked absolutely adorable. I couldn't help, but laugh. He was so cute. With curiosity making my heels feel itchy I approached the group of children who were singing in the distance. I heard the rhythm of the song a while ago and deduced that they must be singing 'Pop goes the weasel'. But as I approached them, the beginning of the first lyric told me that they were actually singing 'Here are the Lady's Knives and Forks'. They weren't playing accordingly. Instead of playing with their fingers, they held each other's hands and danced in a circle. And they changed the lyrics too. Something about the nursery rhyme sent chills down my spine and even though I knew it was just a children's game, I still felt appalled after hearing the modified lyrics:
"Here are the Queen's game pawns,
Here's the Queen's chess table,
Her grudge is deep and she wants revenge
On the vampire who betrayed her."Completely ignoring my presence, the children kept singing and laughing. Something felt weird and for a moment I could swear that I must have met that queen they were talking about. While millions of thoughts crashed inside my head, I didn't notice them making up pairs. Only when they stopped singing and counted the teams, only then I woke up to reality. I shook my head and took a deep breath. It's just a children's nursery rhyme, Denise. It's nothing to worry about. It doesn't require all your attention for you to dig for an answer or a clue.
I looked towards the kids. In their pure innocence, they couldn't understand what I was going through. They couldn't understand that deep inside, I was afraid that the song was related to my story somehow. I tried to put those thoughts aside and concentrate on the moment. Each child had a pair, except the cute boy with chubby cheeks. He seemed sad. I approached him slowly.Denise: What are you playing, kids?
A boy with green eyes, blonde hair and freckles sprinkled across his face answered.
