Prologue

It was quiet, and nerve wrecking when you were sitting in the office with four white walls and a doctor certificate in rows. Your family doctor was taking forever getting the result from a physical exam you taken few weeks ago. You shifted in the chair and began playing with things out of boredom. "Stop doing that!"

You flinched from hearing your father's stern voice next to you. You whined sounding like an impatience child to your father, "But dad, I'm so bored, and he's taking forever."

He let out an exhausted sigh, "Please just stop touching stuff. It's not even yours anyway."

"Fine." You huffed and muttered, "Can't he just run. I got things to do."

"Honey, please just relax."

You rolled your eyes and looked away from him whispering unknowingly, "Do you think I have it?"

There was no response from your father, and you were sure he didn't hear you. You frowned from realizing that you weren't speaking in your normal volume. It was probably one of the signs the disease your father think you have.

You heard a door click and turned around seeing your family doctor smiling at both of you. He walked towards his desk while speaking, "Hello, sorry for keeping you waiting. I just wanted to make sure I got all the information right."

"It's fine." You father smiled.

Your doctor opened the folder and looked at the papers. You tried to take a peek at your result but fail to do so. Your doctor looked up talking towards your father, "Alright so the test result came back and as you said that your family have a history of Parkinson's Disease on your father's side."

Your father nodded, "Yes that's correct."

"Alright, even though we don't have a way to detect if she has Parkinson's or not but since you told me your mother has PD. It helped us to narrow it down since it can be genetic. I had her to take a neurological exam which is a physical exam to help us to see how her body react to certain movements. Do you understand me, Mr. [Surname]?"

"Yes."

"Alright. Um...we were able to spot a few tremors happening in her hands which are where they usually start, and she has a tendency to slouch in a seating positions. Whenever she would move her arms or legs, they tend to flinch alike to shaking but the nerves are reacting in a quick manner. Also, I noticed in her medical record is that she has depression which could happen for people who have PD."

"So does this mean she has it?"

Your family doctor nodded to answer your fathers question while you just sat in your seat staring through the window behind the doctor completely dazed at how nice it was outside. You didn't want to listen to anything that was coming out of the doctor's mouth because you didn't want to believe it. You thought it was just you being tired and stress from school, but you were wrong.

You began to remember how your grandmother was taken away from this disease. She couldn't walk or show any emotions to you, and you used to be scared of looking at her because it wasn't normal from your view. How ironic when you find out that you have something that you used to be afraid of.

"So is there any treatments? I mean the meds she should take." Your father asked with a slightly worried expression on his face.

"Of course there are two type of meds she could take for now since she's at such a young age but I would like to talk to you about trying to do clinical trials."

"Clinical trials?" You asked out of the blue.

You doctor turned to you and explained, "Clinical trials are studies with new and better treatments, medicine and usually people who have a type of disease volunteer for it. It's effective, but there is some danger to it."

"Like what?"

"Well those treatments aren't exactly approved, and some meds can hurt or cure you, so there is some risk in doing clinical trials."

You father turned to you giving you a signal if you wanted to do it then say something. You turned to your family doctor, "Um...do they have it around here?"

"Of course. It's usually three floor above us, but there are some treatments that appeared to be super effective against Parkinson's Disease." Your doctor informed

You father asked, "Like what?"

"Well, it's...in Japan. There had been a few case about a treatment that seemed to be helping a lot with this kind of disease, but the treatment hasn't started here because of the technology."

You turned to your father asking, "I guess we're going to Japan?"

"Are you okay leaving our home? You won't see your friends again." You nodded smiling to mask your sadness of leaving your home and your friends.

I can't believe it. . . Is this what it feels like to lose a part of yourself.
