Modern au - Nick is an author and Jay is just rich lol

Nick's past boyfriends had been wonderful. He truly knew how to pick them - all handsome and strong and excellent in bed. Daisy knew all of this, as she had slept with all of them. It was quite obvious they weren't dating Nick for Nick, because such handsome men and her puny and nerdy cousin were definitely not a perfect match.

Tom had been her favorite, which was evident as he was now her husband, but it wasn't like he could stop her from her string of Nick-found lovers. And obviously she didn't stop him from his odd and dumpy red-haired lover. Her and Tom were truly made for each other.

But then the newest boyfriend came along. Nick was so obviously infatuated with him that Daisy just had to meet him. But Nick didn't introduce them. Usually he got a new boyfriend and would invite Daisy over for tea with them, as if the new boyfriend needed her acceptance. But this time, he seemed to catch on. She didn't even know that he had a new boyfriend until five months into their relationship. And after that, she begged and pleaded to meet him, but Nick was always so very busy. Too busy, in fact, to meet his cousin for tea with his boyfriend just once for about a year.

Over the course of that year Daisy had to pick her lovers up out of various clubs and bars, like another one of those poor people. It was painful and degrading, but it wasn't like she could be expected to stay with Tom forever.

Then, finally, Daisy saw the boyfriend. It was completely by chance, but Nick and he were having dinner at the fancy restaurant she had been at, pretending to be some eligible young lady looking for a lover. Nick was laughing at something his boyfriend had said, and the two were holding hands and feeding each other their own dinners. Daisy had never seen Nick with a boyfriend so weirdly happy.

She made her way over, adding to her gait a delicate curve of her hips and careful steps that showed off her long, golden (totally-not-fake-tanned) legs. Nick noticed her first, his green eyes flashing with worry and he shook his head oh so very carefully, 'please don't come over,' but Daisy ignored him and kept coming over. Her tiny cousin couldn't stop her now that they were only yards away. Nick sighed imperceptibly.

Daisy finally reached their table, "Hi! Nick, it's so lovely to see you. It's been too long. Who's this?" She focused her gaze on the boyfriend, with his beautifully golden skin and blond hair and ocean eyes. His jaw was handsomely chiseled and his hands nice and large and he was so perfect.

Nick put on a fake smile, "Daisy, meet Jay Gatsby, my boyfriend."

"Oh really?" Daisy leaned onto the table, her silk dress with its very low neckline showing just enough to be a tease, but the lovely man didn't even look. Instead he spoke, his voice low and resonating and just as perfect as the rest of him, "Charmed. Nick, we really should be getting home soon."

Daisy watched them go, watched as Gatsby helped Nick into his coat, and the two men went out, leaving Daisy simmering with anger and the need to obtain that perfect man.'Fine,' she thought. 'He's playing hard to get. Two can play that game.'

Over the course of the next two months, Daisy invited herself over to every one of Nick's teas, parties, and social events. She wore her skimpiest clothing, her richest silks, her tightest dresses. Never once did Gatsby look at her anything but appropriately. She learned of Gatsby's favorite color (green), favorite book (some random one Nick had suggested she read sometime that she never had), and his many different types of smiles (and that her favorite was the huge one he had whenever he laughed).

However, every single time she saw him, it was like he wasn't interested. Which was impossible, as everyone was interested in Daisy. That's why they dated Nick. Because they wanted to get with Daisy. It was literally impossible to prefer her idiotic cousin over her.

Finally, at some work party for Nick, Daisy managed to get Gatsby to herself. He looked quite dashing that day, with a perfectly tailored floral suit, and his hair was in a wavy swoop. She had lured him outside on the premise of asking him some questions about Nick's birthday (which she was fairly certain was coming up).

Outside, it was dark and beautiful, clear and full of stars. It was so very romantic, she knew she'd have him tonight. "So what did you want to know about Nick's birth-"
She interrupted his lovely mouth from talking by pressing her own against it, pushing herself up against him, feeling his entire body so near to her. It was intoxicating. But then he pulled away, spluttering, wiping her mouth on his expensive suit. "What was that?!"

Daisy blinked. This was a response she'd never had from a man before. "A kiss? Obviously?"

"I'm dating your cousin!"

"Nobody dates my cousin for my cousin!"

"What does that even mean?!"

This man might be a little messed up in the head, Daisy realized. He had never noticed her advances and he had no idea what a kiss was and he didn't seem to know how terrible his own boyfriend was. "Every single one of Nick's boyfriends are after me! I'm the hot one between us two, and I'm the sexy one between us two, and I'm so much better!"

Gatsby stared at her with a look of disbelief. "You think I've been dating my boyfriend for a year and a half because I wanted to sleep with you once?"

"Yes! Everyone else does!"

"You're delusional! Is that why you're here?"
"What?"

"Nick said you've never shown up to any of his publishing parties before!"

"What publishing parties? I've only come so I can seduce you!"

Gatsby's face flickered dangerously close to anger. "You've been pretending to be nice and understanding to your cousin for years now, just so you can sleep with his boyfriends?! You don't even know anything about him!" Gatsby stood there, breathing heavily, fury an ugly mask on a perfect man. "I'm going inside. Don't bother coming to one of Nick's parties again."

Daisy stood outside in the romantic night, watching as her perfect man walked back to the party, where he took his spot by Nick and kissed him hard on the lips, and when they were done, Nick smiled at him and laughed. "What was that for?" he asked.

"I just really love you."

Sometimes, years later, Nick sort of wondered whatever had happened to Daisy. She'd just randomly one night stopped visiting, stopped calling, stopped texting. He wasn't that worried, as he'd never been superbly happy to have her around, but he was still curious. He ended up dedicating one of his books to her. Jay had been weird about it, and had questioned it. Nick had just shrugged and told him that he couldn't think of anyone else. It wasn't fully true, but his editor would probably get mad if he dedicated another novel to his husband.

The book became an international best seller, and widely acclaimed for its perfect descriptions of a rich woman lost and lonely, albeit surrounded by husbands and lovers and people.
