Chap 1- Here we go again

Sasha's POV

The castle was practically buzzing with excitement for the upcoming ball. The kitchens are always busy and the maids are working extra hard to make sure everything shines.

Mother even squealed like a school girl when she told me all the important people coming to the ball.

"The Duke and Duchess of Varnell will be here as well. They always bring spectacular gifts. The Countess of Naël too. Make sure you show compassion, she's recently widowed. Oh and Prince Charles! " mother rambled.

At this point I stopped listening to her. Besides, I've had these names thrown in my face countless times. The entire reason for this ball is to find a suitable husband at this ball. Every one had their own idea of what I should look for.

"A respectful young lad," the kitchen staff told me.

Once a young maid whispered to me,"A handsome man to satisfy your needs,"she'd said before giggling off to her friends.

I believe Father gave me the best advice.

"You may not end up with someone you initially like, but try your best. Find someone you wouldn't mind spending the rest of your life with," he told her in his library.

This made me think if he had to settle for a woman like Mother who is so, emotionless. How could he maintain a relationship with someone who doesn't care for feelings, but for money and power. Of course I didn't voice these thoughts out to him.

I hid my feelings so no one would know the full extent of how scared I was of the result of this ball. My future depended on who was the best candidate in the ballroom that is being prepared this minute.

I guess I didn't hide them well enough because my seamstress, Cathy , saw right through me.

"What are you fretting over?"she asked me while wrapping a fabric around my waist.

"It's the ball,"It's told her simply.

There was no need to sugar coat it, this was Cathy. She was like the grandmother that wasn't buried before I was born. She had made Mother's wedding dress and  had been employed here ever since. She's one of the few trustworthy people I know.

She clicked her tongue around the pin in her mouth before pinning it in the fabric.

"That ball nonsense again? What's the rush to get you engaged? It's not as if the King and Queen are going to relinquish their hold on the throne, "she replied exasperated.

I suppose this is a strain on her too. Having to make two gorgeous gowns for Mother and I. Knowing Mother, she probably asked to see all of the women that will attend's gowns so none of them out do me.

As if any of the attention wasn't going to be towards me. The ballroom will be crawling with suitors, eager to be the next King of Mardonia. It would be a blessing for some woman to narrow my options.

"Cathy, I'm serious. What if I make a mistake and choose someone awful? Then I have suffer through marriage and have a child with a stranger.

Don't get me wrong, Cathy is really nice, but she stresses over every little thing on the dress, she is like some crinkle patrol officer whenever there are royal parties." Oh my look at my little Sashie," she said while pinching my cheek ,"Your going to have fun at the party for me won't you?".I just sighed."I'll try, but it is really difficult. You'd think I would want to dance with princes all night, but most of them are really full of it. I mean did you see Prince Andrew crying over a scuff mark on his shoe? Talk about drama." She just kept on adjusting the back until she sighed,"I guess that is one of the difficulties of being one of the royal princsses,". 'Do not classify me in any group with those stuck up brats except girls and sometimes I don't even want to be apart of that group." I roll my eyes and shudder thinking of my cousin Cassandra and her brain dead friends. I would kill myself if I was just like them I think to myself. We were soon interupted by Charles coming in to tell me that it was time to go.
