0503 - I Want You
"I made a lot of new friends at the Grammy!" Taehyung said cheerfully like a kid coming back home after the first day at school.
Wheein chuckled and waved at her front camera, "Hi there kiddo. Who're your new friends? OIivia Rodrigo?''
''How do you know?'' He pretended to gasp dramatically then burst into laughter immediately, "You were also watching the Grammy?''
''Yeah, why not? My best boy's on it.'' She cheekily said. Yeah, her best boy, her best friend, her anything and everything, but definitely not her boyfriend.
Taehyung put the phone right in front of him and shifted so that the camera could capture all of his handsomeness, "So... how's your day? Isn't your birthday fan meeting coming soon?" He beamed and asked her.
She was starstruck by his smile for the millionth time since they had first met. After all this time, he was still able to give her the butterflies every time she looked at him. Wheein turned the camera away to hide the blush on her cheeks that he might not see at all.
"How do you know? Did I tell you about this?"
"You tell me everything."
That was mostly true. She told him almost everything, except for the most important thing.
"I love you and I'm not pretending when I say those words to you." She nearly let them slip out of her tongue. Lucky for her, he started to say something and distracted her from embarrassing herself just in time.
"Wheeinie, I may not be back by your birthday."
"What? Why not? It's 2 whole weeks away, you have a new schedule at that time?"
"Nope, just want to spend more time exploring here. Don't worry, my gifts will surely be on time." He flashed his signature square smile at her as if everything he had just said was extremely normal. Meanwhile on the other end of the call, Wheein felt that time had stopped. She hated it so much when he was this cruelly honest.
As an idol, your birthday was not really your birthday; it was still a special day but mostly for your fans. A Kpop idol needed to prepare special events and even gifts to thank their fans on their birthday. Because of that, she had long stopped treating it as a day she could indulge herself and spend time by her family and friends. However her loved ones still sent her birthday wishes and asked if they could come to see her in person so they could give her the gifts they had prepared. Even though that wasn't much, it still made her heart warm. Yet he had never done that for her.
He had given her luxury gifts and sent her birthday wishes at exactly 12AM but he had never been with her on her birthday. Maybe he thought it was just an ordinary day. Maybe he didn't know how much it would mean to her if he so much as asked to meet her on that particular date. Maybe he thought she didn't care that much.
"You're not mad, are you?" He said and cut off her trance of thoughts.
"Nope, not at all. I was just, uh, distracted." She laughed nervously, hoping he didn't notice her suddenly being strange.
"It was you who said that birthdays were not that important once we were this close. Can you show me your face when you're saying that you're not mad? You're not pouting right?" He asked with his eyebrows knitted together.
Just then she realized that she hadn't turned the camera back to show her whole face after turning it away to hide how she had simped over him. She shifted her phone a bit and tried to grin as genuine as possible.
"See, I'm not pouting and not mad at all. Are you satisfied?" She rolled her eyes at him but he still chuckled happily.
"That's my girl. I know you won't take these things personal. I'll bring you lots of gifts once I'm back. Your birthday gift will just be a starter."
"But I just wish you were back on my birthday." No, she mustn't say that. She had indeed said that birthdays were not that important, she just didn't think he would take it that seriously and never show up on her birthday. How she wished she could have told him that even though she had said (and she did think) so, being with him on that special day once in a while would still be great.
She didn't say any of those. She pouted and just told him "Yeah sure" instead.
"I have to go now Wheeinie. I'll call you later."
"Okay, bye Tae." She waved at him.
"I'll be back before you know it. Love you Wheeinie." It always went like this. He would say something that upset her in one way or another, and then he would proceed to comfort her with those alluring things that she was well aware she shouldn't hear. It was not that he was playing with her heart; he would never, he was the sweetest one ever. It was just that... he made it hard for her to let go.
"I know." She chose the safest answer.
"Aren't you gonna say it back?" Taehyung sulked.
"Nope." She was afraid that if she said it back, it wouldn't stop at "I love you". She stuck her tongue at him then said, "Now go."
He grinned and blew kisses at her before turning off the call. She couldn't help but let out a long sigh.
Wheein couldn't risk losing Taehyung from her life. For now she was satisfied with only being his friend. And her love for him, yeah, she would need to work on that herself. But not today.
Today she would let herself dream of the day they could have each other the way she had always wanted.
