Warnings; a sad, melancholy Luisa Madrigal, fluff, cheering up, nickname, bad jokes.
>>I read a headcanon somewhere that Luisa was sensitive about her strength. Not in the sense that she was ashamed of her gift, but in the sense that she feared being too strong & ends up breaking something or hurting someone. Maybe she ends up locking herself in her room after doing one thing or another that she didn't mean to do & won't come out.
"How long has she been in there?" You whisper to Maribel at your side as Isabella & their parents try their best to talk Luisa out of her room. Meribel had personally gone to fetch you from your shift at your family shop which you were already leaving the backroom of the shop where you were taking stock but you were already halfway to Casita once a gut feeling panged. Your mind immediately to Luisa after you overheard some worried farmers talking about a downed donkey.
"Nearly two and a half hours. Ay, she's not usually like this! Normally, she'd let just Mama & Papa in & no one else but even they can't get in. You're the first person I thought of when everything else didn't work." Your brows lift in alarm.
"Nothing?" Maribel pulls her lips in & shakes her head, her curly hair swishing as she did so.
"Nada." You purse your lips in thought while glancing over to her parents & second eldest sister finally spotting you. Without a moment's hesitation, you walk to Luisa's door with her family moving down the steps behind you. The knocks you landed on the dark, light speckled barrier that is your dearest friend's bedroom door. You already know her folks asked her all the basic questions that you'd expect them to, so you'd have to think a little further than the rest. You sit on the floor, cross your legs, then lean against the door.
"Hola, Lulu. It's Y/N. Do you mind if I sit here for a bit?" Silence. You had grown accustomed to people shutting you out of things & now was no exception. If there was one, single thing you learned from El Familia Madrigal, it was that being steadfast & patient with everyone is always a wise choice. At first, after some soft shuffling sounds, the sudden sensation of weight leaning onto the other side of the ethereal-like door shows that you had gotten through. Judging from the shadows under the door, you could tell she was leaning her shoulder into the door, sitting coiled against it.
"Y/N..." She pauses to think over her words as you answered her patiently.
"Si, mi amiga?" She shifts on her side & mumbled something.
"What was that, Lulu?"
"I said I'm sorry about the leg-breaking thing earlier. I didn't mean to do it, I promise." Her voice sounds shaky as if she had been crying for the whole of the two and a half hours she had been in her room. She must have been.
"I know, Lulu. You'd never do anything like that & everyone knows that." You pause when you hear her sniffle feebly, seemingly taking consolation at your gentle words of comfort. You think back on the times the two of you had shared since before her candle ceremony & a light bulb switched on.
"Hey, Lulu? What did the grape say when he got pinched?" She tries to get you back on the subject at hand but you insisted.
"I don't know, Y/N. What'd he say?"
"Nothing, he just gave a little wine." A snicker is enough for you to give another joke you knew she'd like.
"What did the cupcake say to its frosting?" Luisa stilled her voice & asked what the nonexistent pastry said.
"It said 'I would be muffin without you.' I heard the frosting was so sweet after that." You both lost track of how much time had passed like this & you had the strong woman practically cackling on her side of the door. You stopped only when you noticed the smell of food floating from the kitchen.
"Ah, it smells like dinner is ready. Mmm, smells really good this time." You stand with Casita's assistance to stretch away your stiffness. Luisa's laughter faltered which you noticed quickly & caught to assist back into fruition.
"Lulu? Ya' hungry?" You offered as she breaths from her side.
"I'll stay & have dinner with you if you'd like." You extend your warmest vocals through the door as it clicks open partially. Through the crack, you see her tall form in the dimming room. You instantly look into her visible eye as its dark browns bring you some joy at seeing them despite the reddened whites & puffed spots.
All mostly faint, but you had developed a talent for reading people like an open book effortlessly. Instinctually, your arms lift to give her a playful squeezing gesture, suggesting a hug was greatly in order. It takes a moment for the physical offer to settle in for her until she shuffles from her room & embraces you thankfully.
"Thank you, Y/N." Her low voice makes you chuckle.
"No hay problema, mejor amiga. Now, let's hurry & get our plates before Camillo pretends to be one of us & takes ours as seconds." You both playfully race to the dining room where the rest of the family was just starting to gather, an extra seat being set beside Luisa's by Augustine.
"We figured that you'd like to have dinner with us tonight." His hand lifts to the chairs as you & Luisa smile at each other.
