I Only Have You

Chapter 13

Joanna's POV:
I was in P.E. with Brooklyn, David and Maram. We were just hanging out because the coach was out sick and the substitute said after we ran 3 laps we could just have free time.
"How did you and David meet?" Maram asked. David looked at me and looked back at Maram and said "Our dad's are friends. We met 2 years ago. Halloween party."
David's POV:
I told Maram about how Joanna and I met. We were sitting in a circle. Maram was next to me and then Joanna and then Brooklyn next to Joanna. After I told Maram about how we met, she stood up and pushed Joanna next to me and smiled "Did you guys ever fall in love?" I was drinking water and because I was so shocked that Maram asked that, I spit out my water and started to cough. Joanna pat me on the back and Maram was just laughing. "No they didn't." Brooklyn said looking annoyed. We all stopped and looked at Brooklyn and he said again "David can you come with me to get something from my bag?" I came along with him and Joanna and Maram were just talking.
"What do you need to get?"
"Nothing. I just wanted to talk to you."
"What is it?"
"You like Joanna."
I just stared at him.
"What makes you think that?" I said while sitting down.
"Listen. Just answer. Do you like Joanna?"
"What if I do?"
"Then, I guess I'm gonna have to stop you."
"What makes you think that you can?"
"Because I don't like sharing what's mine." he said looking in my eyes.
"I don't think you know what's yours either."
Brooklyn came closer and was about to say something else until Joanna opened the door and said "Time for rehearsals!". Brooklyn and I just smiled and we left P.E. with Joanna and Maram.
Joanna's POV:
Thorpe High School has this award show every year. I won best at science and music. Maram won best at Math, Brooklyn won best at soccer/football and David won best at baseball. The teacher said we had to rehearse so I called the boys to rehearse for the ceremony that was in a couple of hours.
"Okay. So first we will award Maram for Math and she will get this paper as a prize. Next will come Brooklyn for soccer and next David and last will come Joanna. Do you understand?" Mrs. Honey said to us. We all nodded and she said again "Maram and Joanna you can wear a dress and Brooklyn and David you will wear a suit. You may go home to change, but make sure you're back before 6PM. The ceremony starts at 6:30. And also, I'm very proud of you all. You are dissmissed."
We all went home to change and get ready.
"Mom! I won best at science and music!"
Mom came and gave me a hug "Congrats dear! You did well." She gave me a kiss and I told her it was starting at 6:30, then I went up to change. I wore a white dress with some lace and some flats. For my hair, I kept it really simple and just wore it down. "Bye mom. We are gonna rehearse once more. Make sure to get to school before 6:30, because that's when the ceremony starts! Love you!" then I went back to school.
--6:25 PM--
"Joanna is your mom here yet?" David asked. I looked out to the audience because we were already on stage and I didn't see her there. I wonder where she is. I called her number.

"Mom!"
"Hello?" a male on the other end said.
"Who is this?"
"My name is Dr. Jacobs. Do you know Mrs. Abby Smith?"
"Yes. She's my mom. Why are you answering her phone? Where is she?"
"Miss, I'm very sorry to have to tell you this on the phone, but patient Abby Smith had a heart attack and is now in coma."
I felt tears streaming down my cheeks
"What?"
"She fainted around 6:00PM."
I cried and cried some more and just cried until I started screaming "Mom! No! No! No its not true!"
"She has been admitted to County Junior Hospital. Her estimated time to wake up is unknown. I'm very sorry."
"You don't know? You don't know when the only family member I have is gonna wake up?! You're a doctor. Please. Please tell me she's going to wake up!"
"Miss its not certain, but I'm sure your mom will wake up soon."
"Soon? Dr. I don't want soon! I want her here right now at my school telling me I did a good job! Please!"
"Miss, once again I am so very sorry. She is in room 346. Please come as soon as you can. I'll wait for you to come. Goodbye."
I sobbed and sobbed some more until I heard "Next up we have Science and Music!" I wiped my face and walked out to get the paper and shake Mrs. Honey's hand. They took a picture and I saw David on the other side of the stage since he already went. I walked to the other side of the stage just like rehearsals and I felt the tears come back and the sobs get louder. I walked down the few steps and gave David a hug. There I was. Crying in his arms. Feeling as helpless as a human could possibly feel. Brooklyn came and touched my shoulder "Joanna? What's wrong? David what did you do?!" I turned and Brook gave me a hug.
"Brook!" I said while crying.
"I'm here, I'm here, what's wrong?"
"Mom's in a coma."
Brooklyn and David gasped and the words "Mom's in a coma." came back in my head and it hurt even more. Brooklyn and David were rubbing my back as I was crying.
"What do I do? What am I suppose to do if my mom leaves me? Who do I go to? Who do I live with? Where will I go?" I said still crying.
"You can come to me." David said.
Brooklyn looked at me and said "You'll always have me."
Those two sentences from my best friends made the tears a little bit dryer and made me a little bit happier.
