As she painted a drawing, her little brother watching over her shoulder. A ring tone cut through the air. She paused, her brush poised above the white and blackened canvas. It came again, louder."Stay here, I'll be back." She said softly to Matias.
He nodded and she carefully placed the portrait onto the polished wooden boards. She stood up and made her way to the phone. The floor boards made a creek of protest, she traced the lines of the wooden walls as she walked.
She grabbed the phone and held it to her ear. The person on the other side spoke, and after a while of the two of them speaking, she placed the phone onto its holder. She made her way back to her little brother —
Only to find him missing.
Her heart sank, her terror seeped into her. Scenarios filled her mind as she ran off, calling his name. After a while of searching, the sound of a nearby river came off from her side. Carmina broke into a sprint, the sound of the crunching of leaves and dead branches followed her drumming footsteps. She burst out of a bush, sliding down the muddy hill, dirt and mud splashed onto her legs. She stopped with a skid she spotted — his jacket. She reached out and gingerly touched his red jacket, feeling the fabric brush her fingertips. The smooth surface gave her a chill, like someone walking over her grave.
She turned to shout his name, but her shout caught in her throat at the sight she saw. Her brothers little body floating lifelessly on the water surface. His eyes staring blankly. She gasped, reaching out slowly. She grabbed him, holding his broken form in her arms.
Her despair took her into its vast void. Tears slid down her face as she screamed into the sky. She screamed for as long as she could bare. Crows cawed and circled above her, swarming the area in black wings. Her father heard her cries and came to investigate.
He saw Matias and blamed her. Shouted at her as she sobbed, her pain ripping holes inside her chest. A hole filled her, a void. She slammed her teary eyes shut, her sobbing muffled.
His death was her fault. She was foolish to have left him. It's her fault her mother left, now her brother is gone.
