Evelyn Morgan had hands capable of killing thousands. She just didn't know it yet.
She didn't know if it was the schoolwork or the drama, but she hated highschool. Evelyn had never thought about how easy middle school was, compared to what she had to deal with now.
Evelyn was barely more than wallpaper at that point. She had good grades, but not that great. She had decent clothes, but not too noticeable. She styled her hair, but it was bland and boring in comparison to everyone else's. She didn't have the latest fashion, or a boyfriend. She was just... Evelyn. Evelyn the weirdo that hung out in the library all of the time.
It wasn't her fault all she was good at was reading. Well, it was a little bit. Evelyn had only ever been friends with books. She had a few 'popular' kids come to her with their problems, but there was never a person or group she was around all of the time.
She found more comfort in fictional characters and worlds than she did in real people. The forests, towns, cities were so much more welcoming than the crowded halls of Harlinburg High.
As the bell echoed through her skull, Evelyn found herself standing automatically. It was custom for her to head to the library for free period.
Gathering her books, she set off for the library. It may have been a few hallways down, but the location was tattooed in her mind.
The double doors opened for her. It was almost as if the librarian expected her now.
"Good morning, Lehrer," Evelyn greeted the librarian cheerfully. Lehrer smiled.
"I'm not too surprised to see you here, Evelyn. Do you need help finding a new book? I noticed you finished yours last time," Lehrer said.
"I'll just look around. I'd be open to recommendations, though," Evelyn said. She threw her books and bag on a table and set off for the shelves.
The library's selection was large, from fantasy and science fiction to realistic romance. Of course, Eveyn went directly for the fantasy section. There was something about sorcerers and magic and old tales that hit a place close to her heart in such a way that it made her happy. The books on these shelves were old and new, large and small. It was amazing that books could cure even her deepest of sorrows.
Maybe Evelyn should be a poet.
Pulling out a newer book, Evelyn sighed. The book sleeve was laminated and taped to the book itself. She read the inside of the book sleeve and wasn't satisfied. Evelyn had ran through every old, leatherbound fantasy novel that the library had to offer.
Discouraged, Evelyn walked back to her stuff. On top of the pile of books was her newly finished novel, and she returned that to Lehrer's desk.
"Find anything?" Lehrer asked, picking the book up gently from his oak desk. Dejected, Evelyn shook her head.
Lehrer seemed to contemplate something. And, for a second, his warm brown eyes seemed to flash a lively, forest-y green. In the blink of an eye, they were back to normal. "I have an idea. Wait here."
Lehrer opened a door behind his desk. His graying hair was a bit tousled when he reemerged.
"I have a feeling you'll enjoy this one quite a bit."
Whatever book it was, it was covered in brown parchment and sealed with wax. Lehrer was a freak when it came to his favorites. He carefully unsealed it and set it in front of Evelyn, and she nearly gasped.
Whatever book it was, the cover was beautiful. This wasn't just leather. This was real, cowhide leather. In the middle of the front was a huge gem. It was green, possibly an emerald, and definitely real.
"Where the hell did you get something like this?" Evelyn asked, still in awe. Lehrer smiled and shrugged.
"I've had it for years. I've been waiting to lend it to the right person."
Evelyn sat down and ran her hand over the front cover. "What's it about?"
She opened it as Lehrer said "That's for you to decide, Evelyn Morgan."
Whatever she had expected, it wasn't this. There were only a few words starting with
"Evelyn Morgan had hands that could kill thousands..."
She didn't see the first sentence. Evelyn was too busy being concerned.
"Lehrer, this is all that had happened within the last half hour."
Lehrer, a glint in his eyes, nodded. "This isn't just any story, Evelyn. This is your story. This is your beginning."
The pages began to glow. Evelyn had decided that she had accidentally taken drugs. "Lehrer! What the hell is this?"
Lehrer, eyes green and all knowing, winked at her. The golden light consumed every part of her. And then she was falling.
