Today was finally the day! I woke up earlier than usual and got dressed as quickly as I could. When I made my way downstairs, I noticed everyone was still asleep. I grinned and leant down next to Grandpa Joe and gently shook him.
He sat up, quickly, obviously startled. "Wha-? Huh?" He blinked at me.
I giggled. "Sorry Grandpa, but today is the day!" I grinned.
His eyes widened in realization, and he practically leaped out of bed. I fell back onto my butt in surprise. Honestly, I'm going to have to start getting used to that.
"Josie!" He shook my grandmother awake.
Grandma Josephine was not happy being woken up so early, but once she saw the excitement on our faces, she melted into a smile. "Yes, Joey? What is it?"
"Have you seen my good hat?"
"I believe it's under the bed, dear."
"Great!"
By this point, everyone else had begun to wake up. Mum rubbed her eyes and did a double take when she saw me. "Oh, Charlie!" She squealed. "You look so beautiful my dear!"
I blushed and looked down at my feet. "Thanks, mum," I mumbled.
"Oh, for heaven's sake, kid!" Grandpa George yelled, startling me. "Quit acting so bashful. You're gorgeous and if you don't know that by now, then you need glasses!" I snickered.
Mum hurried to her trunk and pulled out a long tan coat. She handed it to me and said, "Here, this should keep you warm until you enter the factory."
"Thanks, mum," I said softly, slipping my arms through it. It was so long, it covered everything. Only my boots were visible and even then, you could only see my ankles. It was quite warm too.
"I'm ready!" Grandpa said, beaming. I turned around and whistled...or tried to anyway.
"Grandpa Joe, you look very handsome!" He grinned at me.
"Thank you, dear. Well, best get a move on it!"
I kissed everyone goodbye and soon, me, mum, dad, and Grandpa Joe were on our way to the factory. I couldn't help but bounce up and down excitedly as we walked. My parents laughed softly. Finally, we reached the gates. I turned around and kissed both of my parents.
"Have fun, Charlie!" dad said.
"Keep an eye on your grandfather, please." I grinned at mum.
"I'll try, but no promises," I joked.
I turned around and headed to the front gates with Grandpa Joe at my side. We ended up standing between the Gloops and the Salts. I looked around. It seems we were the last to arrive.
The wind whipped my hair, and I did my best to smooth it down.
"Daddy, I want to go in!" I heard Veruca whine beside me.
Her father stared at his watch. "It's 9:59, sweetheart," he said helplessly.
"Make time go faster!" She demanded. Both Grandpa Joe and I shared a look of disbelief. Seriously, how rotten could one person be?
"Do you think Mr. Wonka will recognize you?" I asked Grandpa Joe.
"Hard to say, it's been years." He said wistfully.
I nodded and turned around to face the front. Suddenly, I felt a burning stare and I glanced down the line, curious. Violet's mother was glaring at me, though I'm not sure why. "Eyes on the prize, Violet. Eyes on the prize." She said to her daughter after turning away from me. Violet nodded her head vigorously at her mother's words.
