Two days after hearing about the Titanic, James received a telegram. His beloved fiance, Emma had been lost at sea. Her parents arrived in New York safely upon which Mama made sure they could stay with her mother and James was immensely grateful. He looked up when the door opened and Papa entered. He sat down beside him giving a pat on his leg. "I am so sorry, James. She was a sweet young woman. I was proud to be calling her daughter in law."

"Thank you, Papa. Has murray...?"

"They were still dealing with thosands of bodies, but no, there hasn't been word just yet. Lady Hanestruck said that Emma was by her side on the boat but once the Carpathia arrived everyone tried to get off the lifeboat at the same time and several women fell into the ocean. They were unable to swim probably from the ill affects of being in the icy waters."

James nodded, new tears welling in his eyes, he turned away. "Sorry Papa."

"You have no need to spologize, son. "It's devistating of course. I could not imagine what i would do if I lost your mama in that way."

The dressing gong rang and James sighed. Why they had to entertain tonight he didn't know but Mary invited her friend Evelyn Napier.

"If you don't wish to come back down, i'll make your excuses. Mama wouldn't mind."

"No, Evelyn is a good friend, but thank you Papa."
