I've been told I'll be rooming with a British student called Charlie. I hope he's not a complete idiot. I've been accepted into music college and I feel like my dream has come true. Ever since my grandpa taught me the basics of guitar, I've wanted to learn more and I'm also going to be studying the technical side of it all too.
I go to the room I've been assigned and see one room has been taken. It's empty at the moment - it would appear this Charlie isn't here. I can't be bothered unpacking right now so I dump my cases at the end of my bed and go for a wander. A girl with long blonde hair goes dashing past me, a grin on her face.
"I'm late, I'm late" she calls as she runs towards the staircase at the far end of the corridor. She makes me think of the White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland. My little sister has an obsession with all things Disney so I've seen that film more than once. Me? I prefer Star Wars.
I find the cafeteria and decide to get some breakfast. Although I live here in San Diego, it's a fair way from my house and driving everyday would be too time consuming so my mom offered to help me get student accommodation here.
I grab a bagel and some cream cheese along with some orange juice and take them back to my room. Still no sign of this Charlie. He must be an early bird.
I put some of my clothes in the drawers and wardrobe in the room that doesn't seem to have been slept in and put my laptop and iPod dock on the desk that end of the room. The room is a lot bigger than I expected it to be - a small apartment really and it has a small bathroom attached. A toilet, sink and shower are in there. I was told there are more showers down the corridor too so that's good. I remember I need more strings for my guitar so I ask around and I'm told there's a place a few minutes walk away that sells everything for music students. I follow the directions I'm given and find it easily enough. As I enter, I spot the blonde girl from earlier showing a tall skinny guy some drum set. She seems to know what she's on about as she shows him the various accessories that go with it. I look around and see a display of various guitar strings and picks so I head over and choose the ones I want, along with a couple of picks and a guitar strap with turtles on it. I love turtles. Don't judge me. I head over to pay and the blonde is behind the cash desk.
She rings everything through and bags it for me.
"That's 10 dollars please" she says, smiling. Her accent? Wow. It's beautiful. I've no idea where she's from but I could listen to that voice all day.
