"There's nobody left, Ceci." My brother told me, obviously annoyed and upset.
I stared at the dirty tile floor I sat on and shifted my weight uncomfortably.
"How is that possible though, Kenae? You know there might be a chance that mom and dad are somewhere out there. How could you possibly give up now?" I stood up and dusted off my tattered clothes. Kenae stood with me and grabbed my wrist hard enough to make me wince at the pain.
"It's been a month since the explosion and since the virus spread. Don't you think we would've found them if they didn't already die from the bomb or catch the virus?" His voice grew louder with anger, "Get it through your head Ceci! They're GONE!"
I walked along the jagged and torn up road. All the beautiful tall buildings that used to surround these streets had been torn down by the explosion and left to rubble. It was hard to find food that hadn't been infected by the virus. Anything that was in torn plastic couldn't be eaten; we could only have canned foods. There used to be four other kids with us; three boys and a girl. But once they ate the food we found in ripped plastic, they started getting sick. The boys all were nauseous with high fevers and their ears began to bleed. That's when their bodies couldn't take anymore and gave out. The girl was different; she had the same symptoms but gained strength and became vicious. Eventually, it was too much and my brother had to protect us. They're all gone now. It's just Kenae and I. And even though he thinks we're all that's left, I'm almost completely sure that mom and dad are somewhere looking for us.
I searched the new buildings and marked off the area on my map.
"We'll find you soon.." I turned to make my way back to Kenae's and my hideout but stopped when I heard running. I stood quietly and slowly inched my way into a collapsed building. I was halfway inside when I heard another sound of footsteps then a low moan. There was a man and a woman standing like predators, staring at me. Both of their bodies were contorted; limbs twisted inhumanely and slouched over.
"Cecilia..?"
I gasped at the familiar yet corrupt voice that escaped from the woman. She grabbed me from behind when I began to run and grasped my throat, clenching it so I couldn't scream.
"We've finally found you. Now you can be with us." A menacing growl escaped from her throat as she inched her face closer.
I knew they were looking for us.. Tears welled in my eyes when I felt my dad grab my calf and begin tearing at it. All I remember from the night they made me one of them is the drowning gurgle I felt and heard in my throat as they feasted, barely leaving me alive.
Hello you amazing people! This is one of the first flash fictions I have written and had the great idea of going off of this short story and making it into a book! More details like how Kenae and Cecilia's world came to be like this, what their parents were like, how Kenae and Ceci survived for so long and what happened after Ceci was attacked! What do you guys think?
Let me know through your comments and don't forget to vote! :)
