It was two in the morning when George Collins got the call which he feared.
"Hello?" He spoke, his voice coming out rough. "Hello, can I speak to Mr. Collins?" A male voice spoke from other side of the line curiosity burning in the pit. "Speaking. What is it?" George quickly looked over his alarm clock wondering who would call at this time of day!
"It's your mother Mr. Collins. I am sorry to tell you but she passed away few hours ago because of heart failure!"
Air blocked out from his lungs but the voice from the other side continued speaking. "I am Carl Spears, her lawyer. I wanted to tell about the property she left for the young woman named Fiona Collins. I suppose she's your daughter?" it took a while to understand what the man was speaking about.
"Yes, she is." there was an uncomfortable silence but Carl broke it off. "Funeral will be held on for 16th of September."
George took in a sharp breath and controlled the urge to cry out loud. "We'll be there tomorrow." He replied and few seconds later the line went dead. George stood up from his work table and collapsed on his bed. He always have been the disappointing child for his mother but after his younger sister Trinity moved away he was the only one left. But she didn't even budge about giving in. Still now when she is dead she didn't hesitate to show the disappointment and hatred for him when she signed her last valuables to his daughter, not him. After five hours of recalling memories George knocked on Fiona's door.
Fiona was not sleeping by the time she heard the knock. She knew it was her father, after all who would knock at her door other than him at seven in the morning? She opened the door and winced at the dark bags she saw under her father's eyes. His eyes were puffy like he has cried for the night. Just like that she knew something was wrong. "Are you alright, papa?" she asked concern but he didn't answer instantly like he always did.
He never wanted his daughter to worry about him, for once he wanted to see hope on the face of daughter he calls his family and not disappointment he is use to. "I am fine Fiona, it's your grandmother."
Fiona was never the family person as you can say. Her grandmother was never fond of her and that's the reason his father moved out when her mother died of breast cancer. Her grandmother was nothing like a mother to her or for that case for her father. Her grandmother had always been a cold woman devoid of emotions for the two of them, her other siblings, children of Trinity were the exceptions. "She died few hours ago. We are moving back there."
George couldn't muster up the strength to tell her anything more. His mother's topic had always been the burned skin which has left a dark mark in his soul. Fiona had nothing to say. Though her grandmother never loved her but she always craved it. She always did the little things that could make old woman smile at her lovingly like she did when she was with the children of her aunt Trinity. She lived with her grandmother for two years after her mother died, due to coldness for Fiona, George took her away denying to let the history repeat. George never wanted the same fate for his daughter, he refused to let her feeling hurt because of his cold mother. He always was the faithful parent that his mother failed to.
After two hours they were standing at the airport looking at the other people who waved at the flying jet in the far sky. Fiona felt a firm hand on her shoulder and looked over at her aged father. She smiled warmly at him which he returned enthusiastically.
"C'mon it's our cue to leave." George took his daughter's hand in his and lead her into the large crowded airport. He couldn't help the memories to flow in, thinking about how he taught her to walk or cycling. At the thought of his beautiful wife clapping at their daughter's first attempt to walk brought a sad smile on his face.
And it didn't get unnoticed by Fiona. Fiona didn't ask her father about what he was smiling about, she knew his life has always been the emotional roller coaster. They both boarded the plane and just like that Fiona Collins entered the turning point of the roller coaster she rode.
A/N: Hi guys! I'm writing this story not for the sake of getting attention or being popular.
This story is a real struggle and a tribute to those two most strong people I loved, supported, who lay in heavens now. Thanks :)
