How did things end up this way?

It was ( Y/N )'s ninth birthday was her first major incident had occurred. There were many telltale signs leading up to it, but she, and her parents, never paid too much attention to them.

As her birthday grew closer, the signs became more apparent.

Every time she picked up a flower, it would crumble in her grasp. Whenever she was upset and ran into the nearby forest, every step she took led to the decay of wildlife. And how she was chasing a rabbit, and when she finally caught it, it turned into a measly corpse the moment she grazed it.

All these minor incidents were brushed off as nothing but misfortune for the young girl and was overlooked for a while.

But they couldn't ignore it much longer.

A lot of people had gathered to wish the girl a happy ninth birthday. She was one year closer to the double digits, and apparently that was something to celebrate.

As she blew out her candles and went to give her parents a hug, everything went downhill from there.

Their bodies had collided and mere seconds later, they hit the floor.

The room was dead silent at that point. ( Y/N ) repeatedly nudging their lifeless corpses as if this was some kind of joke they planned without her knowledge. However as more time went on with no response from them, that was when the fear crept in.

She tried to feel for their heartbeats but was met with nothing.

Tears pricked the corners of her eyes as she turned to the others for help. They kept their distance. Whispering to each other as they stared at her with fear, judgment, distaste.

But ( Y/N ) was desperate. Reaching out to them in hopes that they would feel her despair and lend her their aid, but no. When she reached her hand out, they backed away. She took a step, they went further.

It was then the tears started rolling down her face.

"Please," she pleaded.

"It wasn't me," she cried.

"Please help them."

Words seem to fall upon deaf ears as they continued to exchange glances with each other, unsure of what to do, or how to approach this situation. But they were sure of one thing:

They had to get out of there.

Those thoughts were soon to put into action once ( Y/N ) started headed towards them. In a panic state, they rushed for the exit. However, with the sudden flurry of everyone trying to leave at once, there was some difficulty in getting through the door.

The stalling allowed the girl to grab hold of someone's hand. Before she could ask, before they could retract, the color drained from their skin, and they dropped to the floor without a moment's notice.

If her parents' uncanny death wasn't enough to settle the guests theory, that person's death sure did.

( Y/N ) dropped to her knees. They flooded out the home and into the village, screaming hysterically and pointing towards the home they just evacuated. "Monster," they proclaimed.

It wasn't long until word got around of what happened. The village decided to take action. Raising pitchforks and torches, they strove to drive this beast out their town.

Typical, right?

When they reached her home, she was in the same position as when they left. On the floor, eyes dead set on her hands, wondering if she bore the same hands as a monster. A bloodthirsty beast.

The villagers acted without delay. Jerking their weapon in her direction to drive her out the back door.

She put up more of a fight than they expected. Making weak and feeble attempts to swipe away any weapon point in her face while making fruitless claims that she was innocent and didn't know what happened.

They didn't know the cause of these events, but they didn't care. All they wanted was for her to leave so they didn't have to worry about living with death itself.

So she ran.

Straight through the back door and into the endless woods behind the house. She kept running until she couldn't see the lights of their torches anymore. She kept running until got lost. Even then she continued running until she tripped over the roots of a tree and sprained her ankle in the process.

As if she didn't cry enough, more tears stained her swollen cheeks.

She was scared. She was confused. And she was alone.

Curling up beside the now decaying trunk of a tree, she buried her face into her knees.

She could feel it. The darkness creeping all around her. The soft chirps of crickets faded into nothing. Any sign of light turned black as she let the endless void slowly consume her.

Fully prepared to succumb to the void, she didn't expect to be saved by light.

"Hey," a voice brought her back to reality. Looking up to locate the culprit, her eyes landed on a boy who looked not too much older than her. Wavy hair and freckles, wearing a sleeveless red shirt and brown shorts.

Confusion danced her eyes as she looked at him, wondering where he came from and why he suddenly approached her.

He matched her confused expression when she failed to respond to him. He pointed the metal pipe her was holding in her direction as if to appear more threatening than he actually was.

"Who are you? And what are you doing here?"
