A tall blonde male and his brooding counterpart sit across from one another. Both are fearful, but one more so than the other.
"Naruto.. it'll be okay." The dark male voiced. This did not lower Naruto's distress. His relationship with his son was already fractured. His constant absence and inability to properly commune with Boruto had torn their father-son bond apart.
"I don't know Sasuke. My relationship with Boruto is bad as it is. I fear this may ruin it completely."
Naruto's tired azure eyes grew grim. The male adjacent to him took a hand and lifted his face. When their eyes met, Naruto's body tensed. Sasuke looked into the already emotionally exhausted male's eyes.
"Naruto. I know you want Boruto to have what you didn't. I know this - but the only way for our relationship to move forward, is to do this."
The blonde nodded and relaxed for only a moment. The front door opening alerted the two males to a familiar presence. The sound of various voices rang into the home and grew closer. Sasuke's arm retreated to his side as two women rounded the corner and nodded to them. The shorter of the two, Hinata, smiled at Naruto. Her smile was strained and it made Naruto feel even more guilty. The first to burst in was Himawari. She ran in, beamed at her father, then took a seat beside him. Boruto and Sarada were last. Boruto almost immediately noticed Sasuke and ran to sit beside him. Sarada paid her respects to the Hokage before taking a seat beside Himawari.
The mothers stood in the doorway and let the men do the talking. They were hurt, but they had foreseen this. The difference between then and now is that they are willing to accept it.
Sasuke and Naruto made strong eye contact before turning to the kids.
"Do you three know why you're here?" The darker male asked.
Sarada was the first to speak up.
"No, but I assume it is something big - considering you, Papa, are here."
She said 'papa' in a way that didn't sit right with Sasuke, but he ignored it.
"Lord Seventh and I have something to tell the three of you, but you mustn't lash out."
Boruto let out a sarcastic groan. "Spit it out already!"
Naruto made eye contact with Hinata once again and she nodded. It was short and clipped. Her eyes were glossed and her jaw was clenched. Naruto felt another pang of guilt hit him. He was thinking of backing out, but it was too late. He felt a light kick to his shin and looked at Sasuke who nodded at him to start.
"Sasuke and I are and have been together for several years now." Naruto revealed, his voice threatening to crack.
Boruto of course was the first to lash out. He yelled at his father about how he could do this. How he could hurt his mother like that, destroy the family. He yelled about spending time with Sasuke instead of him or Himawari. Naruto knew all of this. He'd thought about it for hours on end.
"Boruto," A loud voice rang out. "enough." Eyes went towards the woman who announced the command. Hinata had tears streaming down her face, but an angry expression. "Boruto. Look your father in the eyes. What is it you see?"
The small blonde looked his father in the eye. Naruto stared back, tears glossing his eyes. He forced a small smile but couldn't hold it. Boruto scoffed and looked away. The elder blonde nodded and looked away as well.
"Well, Boruto? What is it?"
"I don't see anything."
Naruto's heart shattered. Every part of his body hurt. He knew this would be the outcome. He would be rejected by his son. Outcast. The blonde lost his composure and tears began to stream down his face.
"Naruto.." Sasuke called softly, placing a hand on the man's shoulder.
Sarada stood, her face dark. She looked at her mother who only nodded. The young Uchiha walked towards the shaking man and embraced him. It was an awkward side hug, but it was one that was desperately needed. Naruto began crying much harder, and his breathing was ragged. Himawari jumped out of her seat and hugged her father too.
"I still love you, Daddy."
Naruto's crying became garbled sobs.
"Thank you,-" Hic. "Hima..."
The two women still stood in the doorway. Hinata was distressed by Naruto's sobbing, but knew she couldn't move from her spot. So instead, she pushed Boruto more.
"Boruto Uzumaki, come here.."
Boruto looked up at his mother. Her dark expression made the boy succumb much easier than if it was a bright. He stood from his seat and walked until he was directly ahead of her. She put her hands on his shoulders, then spun him around to look at the scene.
"Boruto...You're father needs your support. I know you think he's hurting me, but he's not." Hinata whispered in her son's ear. He was taken aback by her words but kept listening. "Boruto, I knew he loved Sasuke." She paused.
"I knew it, but wouldn't accept it. I forced myself onto him, and him - being the giant sweetheart he is - he let me. He barely spent any time with Sasuke, all of his spare time was spent on either you or your sister."
Boruto looked at his mother, her eyes held sorrow and regret. He looked back to his father and his eyes began to gloss over. He had forgotten to look at it from all sides.
