Hi my name is Abeni I'm a 22 years old girl I was born in South Africa specifically in Pretoria until my parents decided to move to America when I first got off the plane I saw everyone staring and whispering, I was a kid back then so I didn't know about racism and stuff like that, so I just thought they were complimenting about how beautiful my new outfit is, but when I looked at my parents I saw them looking kind of embarrassed. I asked them why they were embarrassed but they said that they were just a little nervous because this is their first time traveling. At the age of 4, my parents enrolled me in a new public school. When I stepped into the classroom everyone started whispering and giggling. I thought I was maybe because I was wearing my slippers so I checked but I was wearing my shoes, then it got me it was because of my skin color. I just looked down at the floor and sat in my seat. In the first session, we had English the teacher asked me to introduce myself to the class so I got up and went to the board. When I started speaking the whole class except the teacher started laughing at my accent I was so embarrassed, so I just said my name in my lowest voice possible and looked at the floor, and went back to my seat. I spent all my childhood and school years like that and every year I kept on nagging for my parents to homeschool me  I just can't stand people whispering and laughing at me all the time. Finally, when I was 8 years old my parents gave up and got me, private tutors, to homeschool me.
