It had been thirteen years since Naomi slipped the paper into his back pocket. The days after changed the course of everything.
Within days of Naomi telling the story Kayan's mother grew very ill. Looking back she had been growing weaker long for months. One night, she picked up a fever and could barely move.
When his aunt discovered this she immediately told Kayan to start packing his bags. When he finally put together what he needed he stumbled down the stairs to find his mother in kitchen.
He ran to hug her but she stopped him.
"No, you can't touch me or they could find you. Naomi and I are going to visit Rela lake. Once we have washed away the... our bad vibes we'll come back. Until then I need you to stay with our neighbor Jay."
They all got in the carriage and left their home. Dusk began to fall as the carriage pulled in-front of Jay's house. After a quick exchange of words Jay began taking Kayan inside.
Suddenly a second carriage pulled and four women hopped out. Kayan tried to see what was going on but Jay ushered him forward. He could only slightly make out the conversation.
"We are from the institute of magic control. We have sensed that magic has been used and on behalf of the princess's health we are here to remove the magic user."
"I only used the magic to save my sister."
"There is no need for explanations anyone involved must be executed. Both the one who received it and the one who lives because of it."
Executed, Kayan thought this was a very interesting word. Maybe I can ask Jay what it means tomorrow morning. He ate the rest of his cookie and began to doze off thinking of all the stories his mom would share from the lake.
