I was in shock. As my eyes opened and my memories came flooding back, I tried to make sense of them. It all happened so quickly. I thought I was making the right choice by leaving. Now the love of my life is gone. She is all I have ever wanted and needed. Imagining her beautiful voice encouraging me is all I can do to keep going. I make it outside to my rusty bike, and pedal with all the strength I could muster. I reach my hiding spot in the corner store alleyway. I know I won't be able to rest until I find Sam. I grab some supplies and make my way to my car. The owner and I have an agreement, so I always leave it on his property. I pull out of the the parking lot and start towards the destination, mothers compound. I can't even call it a home anymore, but I hope I will find some information there.
I dim the headlights as I pull up to an all too familiar gravel road. The rocks remind me of the one I threw at my sister to satisfy my mother. She was never satisfied. No matter what I did, I was always too weak, too small, too defiant. I thought my sisters would grow up and support me, but they stayed under mother's thumb. I don't blame them. They are chasing the approval I once craved. Only now I know it's impossible.
As I approached the house it looked empty. Too empty. No cars in the parking lot, or "children" guarding the perimeter. All of the lights were out except for one room, mine. I felt like they would have something waiting for me, so I pulled out my gun and opened the cracked wooden door. I continued in, watching my back, head on a swivel, just like I was trained. I went up the old carpet covered stairs until I reached "my room"at the top. There was a laptop, polaroid and a note that read "play the video, complete your assignment, or there will be serious consequences."
I opened the laptop and played the video. I immediately felt sick as I saw Sam tied to a boiler in a basement. She didn't look hurt, but her scared eyes broke me in half. I knew it was all my fault. The last time she saw me I almost shot her... Even then she still cared for me. I don't deserve her. Some seconds later, Ty came on screen. Her signature scowl in full force. "Hello little Nikki, If you're watching this you're at home. Oh and you're on camera, but you knew that. I have your little girlfriend here. She will not shut the fuck up. Very feisty, just like you. I think she would be a great candidate for the program. I would enjoy breaking her spirit. But business first. The polaroid has a picture of a man named Glen Arrowood. There is some information on him and his family on the back. We need him dead in 48 hours. If not Sam will dissappear forever, or worse. Get it done Nikki."
I wonder what this Glen guy did to deserve death. I want to look into him before I execute him. I know the clock is ticking, so I'll have to try my best. I haven't killed anyone in 2 years and I swore I wouldn't again. I promised myself I wouldn't let anyone force my hand. But I'll do whatever I have to for Sam. This seems to be run by Ty but I know she doesn't do anything without speaking to mother. The plan is to find Sam before I have to kill anyone, but that can only happen if everything goes perfect. I know if I kill this man I will have to go back to the program forever, and my promise will be broken.
