Born in an old cottage on the outskirts of a small village, Zeffrine was one of three children born to Merla and Adalgrim Mistlethrush. She had two siblings, Gelvira and Verna, and was the middle child (explains a lot).
She referred to her parents as Ma (Mother) and Da (Father). To her knowledge, she has no aunts/uncles or cousins.
Zeffrine's name derives from the greek name "Zephyrine", meaning 'West Wind'.
When Zeffrine was six, Merla decided she had enough of the peaceful domestic life and, despite Adalgrim's protests, left.
Unfortunately, this also cost the family their money, with their savings quickly running out, as Merla had previously brought the most finance back. Suddenly finding himself a single father of three young halflings with large appetites, Adalgrim sought a loan from Quinrel Idrick. In doing this, however, he ran himself into debt, and found that his lender was far less than benevolent.
Adalgrim became paranoid very quickly, now being in a mess with the loan shark, and fashioned small hiding places for him and his children, in case the bailiffs came a-knocking.
Eventually they did, and they demanded the payment by destroying the place, and threatening to take the children, Zeffrine included. Adalgrim got into a fight with one trying to stop them from getting to them, and had his neck snapped. This was a mistake on the bailiffs part, as they weren't supposed to kill the one who owed their boss. They also had three witnesses on their hands. Zeffrine ran away through a hidden door, but her siblings didn't make it through- she hasn't seen them since.
She found herself, eventually, at a university that trained rouges, ninjas and the like, and was raised by the scholars there until she was old enough to enrol. She was soon to discover who ran this school, however - Professor Quinrel Idrick. She later learned, from a classmate/her aquatic elf girlfriend, Layris, that he was suspected of extortion, and that rang a bell for Zeffrine. However, now nineteen, Zeffrine didn't care much for dealing with the headmaster.
Layris eventually uncovered enough evidence to turn Idrick in, but made a mistake in trying to blackmail him. He murdered her, and burned the evidence. The body was never recovered. Zeffrine however, saw everything, yet no-one believed her when she tried to expose him.
So she took matters into her own hands. Now certain he was the one responsible for her father's death, and the assumed deaths of her siblings, and now the murderer of her partner, Zeffrine devised a plan to kill him.
It took a few months of strategising, as Idrick was heavily protected, and any weapons were stored in a locked armoury. Zeffrine managed to steal the only weapon she could carry from the main armoury - a flick mace- and broke into Idrick's office. They struggled, Zeffrine earning a scar on her left eye from Idrick's weapon, but eventually she managed to trip him, sending him sprawling to the ground. It was then she stood and took the opportunity - smashing his skull with the mace and setting fire to his office. The fire quickly spread, however, and in less than an hour the whole place was alight, consequently killing many of the scholars and professors within - the very people she was raised by.
She then resorted to live on the lam, having been seen fleeing the scene with the bloodied mace.
Six years go by, and she still has one ally - an old Centaur Barkeep called Daniel, who introduces her to the party staying at his Inn that night.
Seeing it as an opportunity to better evade the law, Zeffrine goes with them, on the way being very suddenly adopted by Doobie Scoob and her partners (but mostly Doobie Scoob).
