"What seems to be the problem here?" The voice asked. It was a calmer voice than the fairy, and much kinder.
"Lady May! These intruders just came out of nowhere!" The fairy yelled, quickly flying into the woman's palms. This woman was about half as tall as the tress, with long, green hair that resembled vines dotted with pink and red flowers. Her outfit was a long, white dress with a forest pattern running along the bottom. She was kneeling as she listened to the fairy's story, and Lilac noticed the soft, blue eyes that the woman had, along with the most gentle smile anyone could have seen.
As the fairy finished her story, Lady May gave a nod. "Thank you, young one. I will be sure to take care of this." She said. The fairy seemed to be happy with the response and promptly flew away, leaving the two scientists with Lady May. She turned to them, a soft smile still on her face, as she began to speak to them.
"I see you two have lost your way," She said. The scientists looked at her, a sense of calm washing over them. Unlike the fairy from before, this woman seemed like the perfect person to ask for help.
"We...we did get lost. Could you help us get back home?" Mark asked.
"Of course, young ones. Do you remember the path you took?"
Mark and Lilac looked at each other, then back at Lady May. "No. This place is unfamiliar to us, and everything seems to repeat around these parts," Lilac said. Mark nodded. "In all honesty, we were separated from the start, so we were kind of scrambling to find each other."
Lady May thought for a moment before frowning. "How unfortunate," she said as she lowered her head. However, she soon smiled again and lifted her head to look at the scientists. She stood up and walked toward them. "I believe I haven't introduced myself properly yet. My name is May, but the fairies call me Lady May." She stretched out her hand to Lilac. Lilac looked for a moment before taking it.
"My name is Lilac. This is my friend and science partner Mark." Lady May turned to Mark and offered a hand to him as well, but he didn't budge. His hands were crossed, and he had a nervous look on his face as he took into account just how tall this person in front of him was. Lady May noticed his hesitancy right away, and slowly lowered her hand. "I can assure you that I mean no harm to you two," Lady May said. Mark began to loosen up a little at her words, for they were as soft and as beautiful as a quiet melody. He stretched out his hand to her, saying, "Sorry about that. We don't mean any harm either. We just want to go home."
Lady May smiled and shook his hand. "You say that your path seemed to repeat?" She asked. Lilac nodded, causing Lady May to think for a moment. "If that is the case, it will take a bit of time before you are able to find your starting point again," she said. "Please, follow me. We will make a plan for your return home."
Lady May began to walk, with the two scientists beside her. "As she thoughts about what Lady Amy said, confusion started to seep into Lilac's mind. Why do we need to make a plan?" she asked. Lady May looked at her and said, "These woods are meant to protect us, so they intentionally change their looks to confuse intruders."
Lilac quickly went into a face of shock. Mark, meanwhile, was able to keep the surprise inside. "You mean that these woods are alive?" Mark asked.
"Yes, they very much are sentient beings."
"That's amazing! So they protect the fairies around here?"Lilac yelled.
"Us and any other creature that comes within its path." Lady May responded. Her voice was smooth and calm, much like how she walked and presented herself.
Lilac and Mark walked in awe of what they had heard. As they kept walking, they came across a pond. It had hundreds of fairies around it, and the plant life was even more vibrant and colorful. As lilac looked around, she saw white and sky blue bunnies jumping around her. Colorful birds could be seen overhead, and even the water in the pond seemed to be alive, moving in graceful waves around the fairies as the water seemed to play with the fairies around it. Lilac watched in awe as she looked on at the environment. Lady May seemed to noticed, and a small smile creeped onto her face.
