Commander Jung glanced at Jin, whose eyes were resting on the horizon. The setting sun taunted him, shrieking out profanities Jin had heard one too many times in his life. "Sir," the commander said, his voice a mix of stern and calm that had the hairs on the back of Jin's neck standing up. "We only have so long until our enemies find us. If we can find this place, the odds are they will too. They aren't about to let us survive and rebuild. They're not like that."
"I know. Have you set up a patrol schedule?"
"Yes sir, but we don't have enough knights left to maintain it. We need to recruit from other kingdoms. Start trading. Start our lives again."
"That's hard when we're in unmarked territory." Jin leaned on the backs of his feet and crossed his arms over his chest. They were on the balcony of the castle, Commander Jung with him while the rest of the kingdom was continuing to rebuild what was left behind by King Min's people. They had enough gold to buy whatever food and supplies they needed, but that gold meant nothing if they didn't have anyone to give it to. "Have Jimin lead a mission. Send him, his wife, and Namjoon out on horses to make a new map of the surrounding area. Find traders and neighboring kingdoms. Have Jimin pick a team of his choice of no more than 10. Understood?"
"Yes sir. Shall I accompany him?"
"No, I need my lead guard here."
"As you wish." Hoseok dipped his head. "Shall I recommend he takes a knight or two?"
"I'm sure he'll take Jungkook. Between him and Namjoon, the girth of their chests are enough to protect them," Jin replied, and Hoseok couldn't disagree. Jin dismissed him, and that left him there on the balcony of his new home. He was overlooking all the activity, preparing for an attack to inevitably come. The odds were they were screwed. If not from their enemies finding them, then from the new enemies they would create simply by existing in this space.
Jin lit up. King Min. He would know about the other kingdoms residing around these parts. But would he even speak? Jin bit his lip and decided trying was better than nothing. After all, it had been almost a full twenty-four hours since he last visited the fallen king.
So, Jin went to the commoners down by the edge of the kingdom. The sector near the waterfall. Jin found Taehyung and made a quick meal for Yoongi in the hopes that the man would keep his strength up. They weren't lacking food. They were rationing, but not in any danger of losing anything. Hopefully giving the caveman a meal would help. Jin wanted to believe it would help, and he stuck to those beliefs as dearly as he could.
By the time he was done, he clapped Taehyung on the shoulder and departed the kingdom. He did his best to keep the bowl of food safe as he traversed the waterfall and went by it, his boots wet and his sleeveless leather chestplate strung tightly around his chest. His wide shoulders stretched out his navy long-sleeved tunic, the shirt's cuffs loose and hanging around his wrists. Meanwhile his pants were tucked underneath his knee high boots, stains of grease and grime littering the dark item and making splotches of brown on an otherwise black fabric.
Jin went inside with his teeth clattering together, a sudden cool air brushing over his flesh. This time, Jin didn't have firewood or a torch. No sword, no flint, no wood. Nothing. So, he was left in the dark with a man who wasn't the friendliest person Jin had ever interacted with.
Despite that, Jin bit back any fear he might have felt and continued his journey into the abyss. By the time he came to the end, he saw the outline of a cloaked man stand, his pale skin the most visible part of him. Yoongi stepped forward, the little light shining inside touching the sides of his body. The cloak covered much of him, and Jin couldn't tell if Yoongi was eating properly because of that. Jin frowned, placing the bowl of stew down in front of the logs of firewood that were there yesterday.
