One day had gone by and we did not mention what had happened. Neither him nor I had even tried to discuss it. Maybe because we both felt overwhelmed. It had not just been the physical sensation but something else interly. For a moment we had not been two separat parts but one being enclosed by the mixing of our powers. Not something either of us had anticipated. We barely talked at all and Dean's personality was unrecongnizable. He seemed much more like James now, which gave me a few uncomfortable ideas.
Now all that did not matter. We we're standing in front of an old airport. Presumebly the airport which Caine resided in. I was tense, every sense on edge, waiting for the smalltest hint. But I was not nervous. This was my chance to redeem myself. If I did not manage to prove myself useful, I might as well let Caine kill me. To have Dean been right about my uselessness would be worse than anything else. Though he had not mentioned it for a while now, I felt watched by him. As if he was going to judge my performance.
We moved swiftly and silently through the night. Getting into the airport was no problem. But finding anyone there, especially when they would not want t be found, would be a challenge. He could hide in a plane, or one of the many buildings. His senses would warn him and it was very likely he had a few minions with him. But another vampire would be unlikely. Caine cannot share.
"Go check out the planes, when you're done meet me at the lobby," Deans instructions were delivered in a quiet and stern voice. He hadn't even been this serious the first time we fought with Caine. Maybe it was because now he was the only vampire. I didn't even reply and only changed directions. Getting away from him was both relieving and terrifying. The horrible tension from the last 24 hours left but now I was entirely relient on my own skills. No safety net to catch me.
The eerie silence didn't help to make it less unnerving. Complete and utter lack of noise is a strong indicator for the presence of a vampire. Nature usually goes quite when a predator is around. Before checking out the first plane I could feel my heartbeat everywhere. I crept up the stairs to the dark entrance, ready to attack at the first sign of movement. But everything stayed quiet. When I reached the entrance, I quickly jumped inside. It felt like the tension that had been building up inside me errupted. But there was nothing to errupt at. The plane was quiet and I could not make out any movement. Slowly and silently I moved along the rows, trying to keep my eyes everywhere at once.
It took me about ten minutes to check the plane but I did not find anything. On the one hand I was relieved but on the other I was disappointed. Now I was going to have to check another one and the whole ordeal was going to repeat itself. I reached the exit again and just as I was about to step outside I saw them. Dragging their feet over the pavement, seemingly aimlessly. About a dozen Liveless were scattered over the runway. They were going to notice me once I tried getting to the next plane. I took a deep breath, this was going to cost a lot of power. The closer I would let them get to me, the better. Then I didn't have to project it too far.
I stepped outside and quickly descended the stairs. With a brisk walk I moved towards them. It did not take them long to notice me and their aimless wandering turned into a run to me fast. My instinct was to push my powers toward them immedeatly but I forced myself to wait.
