Talking about us POG

"I'm not going to talk about you now," I chuckle and roll my eyes. I wave hello to Hubert and turn to the doorway. I see Attie sitting on the rollie chair. She's spinning a sparkling and fizzy red potion that smells like watermelon.

"Who were you talking to dad?" Attie raises an eyebrow and spins around in the chair.

"Is there champagne in that?" I ask leaning against the door frame.

"No it's soda, I can't find any of the alcohol that is definitely in this house."

"There's none here. I don't get it anymore Attie. Like at all. Wilbur for some reason made sure to--" I have no idea why Wilbur started

"I found the bottles several months ago, dad. I put together the pieces of a hangover," She interrupts.

"OK fine Yeah, yes after Wilbur died, but that was the first time in centuries. I'm sorry if I scared you or anything." I push my hair back nervously.

"No. No," She sighs, corking the bottle and setting it on the desk. "Mother was enough," She grumbles. "I would have liked to talk with him, you know. Today. It would have been nice."

I blink, letting go of my hair. "He was what?!" Shit, if Dream-.

"Yeah guess you guys never really talked after, you know?" She shrugs.

"I'm sorry," I sigh.

"There are a lot of things you could be apologizing for, elaborate please." She waves her hand, gesturing for me to elaborate.

"I'm sorry that you have to grow up without a mother, and I missed five years of your life." I sigh, I would do it again if I replayed life, it would be shorter since I know who and how to slay them, also save innocent lives. But I don't think we, she would have been safe without it.

"Yeah there we go," She smiles, jumping up. She lightly punches me; I raise a bracer covered arm to block. Attie laughs and seizes the arm and pushes, imitating the move that would flip someone on their back or fracture their arm. I know she can, I’ve seen her do it to a zombie and not get bitten.

I laugh along and dramatically fall into the chair. She pulls a dagger from the hidden sheath under her shirt. She holds it up to my neck, a beaming smile on her face.

"I've been bested!" I clutch a hand to my chest. "The noble Atalanta has bested the blood god in fair combat!"

She giggles, putting the dagger away. "Daaaaddd! Don't call me that!" She pulls me up.

"Well it's more warrior-like than "Attie"." I say Attie bouncily and Attie laughs. "I mean what was your Mother thinking?" I chuckle, trailing off.

Attie squeezes my arm. "You don't want to talk about him, do you?"

I sigh. "No, I'm sorry Attie. I would, but after Tommy and Wilbur and all that I don't think I can."

"I would say I understand, but I'm also 14 and have literally no friends." She spins a gem bracket on her wrist. "Which I blame you for," She chuckles jokingly.

"Yeah my fault." I get up. "I made grilled cheese."

"Oh! Food!" She giggles.

"Yeah." I smile. "You want to get Tommy or shall I?"

"Ehhh…You go get him. I still don't know him very well." She skips out of the room.

"You should get to know him. You're very alike." I follow her.

"I haven't seen that," she remarks, unbelievingly. "Hi Hubert." She waves.

"I think that's the...well whatever happened to him."

"Do you not know or will you not tell me?" There’s a hint of malice in her voice. She climbs up the ladder.

"Mostly don't know, I explained L'manburg Yeah?" I climb up after her.

"Briefly."

"Good, good," I hum, closing the trap door behind me.

"You can tell me more, though!" She says sing songily, smiling wide.

"No I can't." I ruffle her hair.

She swats at my hand. "Come on Dad please! Mother never babied me! I'm the daughter of the blood god. Come on!"

"No, your mother is just a better liar than me. I'm guessing she told you the barest of information and flourished it." I pull on my cape.

She pauses and thinks for a moment. "Holy shit he did. Wow." She chuckles. "How many people did you kill? Were you genuinely an emperor at one point? Isn't that a government? Can you actually control blood? Is Grampa Phil really the Angel of Death? Is grandma really a goddess?" She looks at me with a big smile and wide eyes. "Tell me more!"

Well, this is an unexpected bought of curiosity. "Ahhhhh...well… yes to the last two," I answer hastily and side step towards the door.

"I'll ask later then," She snickers. "Wait dad." She grabs me and rubs her wrist on the scent glands on my neck, scenting me. Not a traditional for pups to do, but I mean it's us.

"Umm.. what?" I ask quizzically and scent her as well.

"Pup scent overrides the angry one," She hums and gives me a hug. "Then Tommy won't tense up, he's fun when he's not second guessing his every word."

"Told you you'd like him." I real estate the hug and open the door. It still smells like lime outside. "Also how do you know that?" I thought I hid every book that wasn't child appropriate; which was most of them.

"Yeah yeah." She rolls her eyes and heads towards the kitchen. “Mother told me. Omega scent does the same. He did it enough the years I had two parents and the 24 times you were back,” she mutters.

“I didn’t know you noticed that. I’m sorry I get mad a lot. It’s not pointed at you Attie-” I stop when I hear a scream. From the kennels, Tommy.

"What was that?!" Attie exclaims, grabbing her coat and pulling on her boots, not bothering to lace them up. Before rushing out the door behind me.
