SAMIRA O'CONNELL

i watched alex try to calm my mom down as he took us to the car.

"she fucking lied to me again, alex!" she sobbed with a frown, her voice was strained from all her crying.

she was hysterical.

it hurt me to see her like this, i wish there was something i could do to comfort her.

"okay salem you need to calm down." he sat her down in the car and she wiped her face with her shaky hands.

"sam go ahead and get in the car, babe, i'm gonna talk to your mom."

"i wanna stay and make sure she's okay." i told him and he just nodded and kept talking to her in a hushed tone.

"i'm just done, alex. i don't care about getting her back or anything i'm done. i want to leave." she cried, her body jolted every time and she hiccuped.

i haven't seen her this bad in a while.

"i know, i know." alex shushed her and gave her a hug.

eventually she calmed down and we left the party and went home.

"look out for you mom, okay?" alex patted my shoulder and i nodded waiting for him to walk out.

when he left i walked back to the kitchen where mom was sitting at one of the island stools, a glass of wine in her hand.

i knew she was probably such a mess because she was intoxicated too.

"i'm sorry your birthday got ruined mommy," i said softly, walking up to the counter. i gently took the wine glass from her hand and set it by the sink and she sighed.

she didn't need anymore alcohol.

"don't say sorry, it's not your fault. it really has nothing to do with you pooh so don't stress yourself out."

"i know but i want you to be okay," i whispered, going to stand close to her and she fluffed my curls softly, "are you mad at mama?"

"sam it's really nothing you need to worry about, okay?"

"did she hurt you?" i whimpered, feeling my eyes well up.

i didn't want them to fight. and i didn't want to lose mama when she just found out about me.

i only wanted them to be happy.

"don't cry baby." she pulled me into her arms and that only made me cry harder.

"i don't want you guys to fight." i sniffled and she rubbed my back, kissing my head.

she let me cry on her shoulder until someone banging at the door interrupted us. that someone being my mom.

"stay in here."

i watched mom walk out of the kitchen and through the foyer, it was a big space so i wouldn't be able to hear any conversation being heard.
