Dumbledore had knocked on the door to the house of Sirius Black and Remus Lupin, both unknown to the reason for the visit of their previous headmaster. Sirius, who had opened the door, was confused to why Dumbledore had visited them weeks prior to the end of year but more confused on why he would be personally visiting them- he usually invites parents to his office or just simply sent a letter, never does he personally visits them.
"Please, come in." Sirius said, voice unsure as he gestured Dumbledore through, glancing at Remus confused. "Remus and I are set up in the kitchen, would you perhaps like a cup of tea?"
"That will be fine, Mr Black. I'm sorry if I'm interrupting your lunch, I've just come by for a quick chat, you both may want to sit down for this." Dumbledore said, watching as the couple sat down at their kitchen table, standing off to the side.
"Is everything alright, Dumbledore?" Remus questioned, placing down his cup with his hands wrapped around it- the words "Daddy's cup" just about being seen between his fingers.
"Your only daughter drowned today," Dumbledore had said without warning, shocking the couple into complete silence. Remus had almost knocked over the cup and Sirius almost choking on the gasp he had sucked in. Neither knowing truly what to say.
"Our daughter, Y/N? No, she's safe at Hogwarts." Sirius said, defensively, glancing at Remus as if he was going to confirm his words- shouldn't Dumbledore be confirming this statement, he was the headmaster of Hogwarts after all?
"She's very happy there," Remus said, partially with disbelief, also glancing at Sirius. "Or, so we hear." He said, remembering all the letters she had sent them from her first day of first year to the most recent one from three days prior- they were all filled with happy events that she had experienced, never anything negative or was she just avoiding all the negative.
"She's always been so goddamn independent." Sirius muttered to himself a light smile from the thought of his daughter before the thought was replaced by the words 'your only daughter drowned today' repeatedly going off within his head.
"The years go by and now we barely see her." Remus said, more so speaking to Sirius.
"Our daughter, Y/N? You must be mistaken." Sirius said, standing up defensively and facing Dumbledore, not wanting to believe the words he had heard. He was in denial, there was no way that she was gone, she would be in the great hall eating her lunch, sat with her friends and talking about their subjects or a club or maybe a party that was coming up.
"You mean the girl we raised as if our own?" It was clear in Remus' voice he was heart broken saying the words, he didn't want to believe it either.
"We loved her so much, she felt like our child." Sirius grabbed Remus' arm, lost for breath and balance, his world slipping from him.
"But eventually we had to say goodbye." Remus whispered softly, his hand over Sirius' as they looked at each other.
"I'm so sorry for your lose." Dumbledore spoke, no emotion in his voice- they believed it wasn't because he was being strong for the both of them.
"Thank you, for immediately telling us, Dumbledore." Remus said after sitting Sirius back down. "It must be hard having to tell the parents of one of your students about their death. I presume no headmaster before you said that this would come with the job."
"It's not the first time I have lost a student." Dumbledore replied.
"Moaning Myrtle," Sirius whispered. "She was only fourteen." He continued to whisper. "Y/N is just sixteen, she's a child. My child, our child. What happened?" He choked out, dropping his head to hide his emotions.
