When completing the soul bond a special mark will appear on both soulmates, the mark will give off this special scent letting every supernatural creature that you have a mate and have completed the bond. All marks are different for every soulmate bond. The scent tends to repel others, however some don't mind the scent and can withstand it, and sometimes people don't care that you are mated and will still try their luck. Once bonded the soulmates will be able to feel the other's pain amongst other things, including having shared magic, as well as being able to speak through a special mind link created by the bond.
