Chapter 4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Alyson, please read this piece of persuasive text to the class" Ms Bertei instructed Alyson "Don't forget to include all the information"
"This is a persuasive essay about convincing the school board to change our notes on paper to laptops that we all would be given, even if they weren't too good" Alyson said, reading the title and moving on to the persuasive text "Isn't it amazing how far we have gone with technology? Don't you think it would be cool typing memos to your friends instead of writing? I remember when I was just a little kid; I never had enough money to even get close to buying a fourth of the least expensive laptop. Laptops would make things much easier for us in school.
"An important reason for having laptops in school concerns their use as an aid in the prevention of arthritis, which can occur from clenching your fingers when you write. Writing for long periods of time can also cause finger cramping, bruising of your knuckles, and other physical discomfort. When you are typing, you can relax your fingers. A second reason for having laptops in school is that scribbled words created by sloppy handwriting appear more difficult to read than typed words. Using a laptop can also allow you to easily correct mistakes. Any teacher would love to read an exciting paper that you wrote if it was legible and didn't have errors. This could lead to better grades.
"Of course, convincing your parents to buy you a laptop presents another story. Your mom might say 'son I don't think the idea of you or anybody else wasting their money on a laptop' she might not recognize the importance of owning a laptop, thinking that they cost too much. When you present your argument, your mum may hesitate and then say 'I don't know, ask your father!' when you speak to your father about buying a laptop, he may say, 'I'm not sure son! What if you break it or lose it? Plus, everyone in school may want your laptop' when you tell your dad that no one in school would steal your laptop, that everyone else would also have-" Alyson said, getting cut off by the siren
"Thank you Alyson, that was very good. We will continue on persuasive writing tomorrow." said Ms Bertei
Alyson hurried out of class and headed for the library, to get a book out so she could read Serenity a bedtime story.
When she got to the library, which was in a secluded area, near the darkrooms, on the second floor, she went straight to the picture book section, which had a very wide variety of picture books. Alyson picked out three picture books, which included; ‘The Rainbow Fish’, ‘Uno’s Garden’ and ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’, and she got a book a book titled; ‘Eragon’ for herself.
After choosing her book, Alyson picked up her small pile of books and headed to the librarian’s desk, which she had seen on her way in, she put the books on the desk and waited for the Librarian.
“Would you like to get those books out?” The librarian asked, causing Alyson to let out a small squeak
“Oh. Um. Yes please” Alyson mumbled
“Alright, what’s your number?”
“My what sorry?”
“Your library number” Said the Librarian, sounding annoyed
“I’m new here” said Alyson “I don’t have one yet”
“Alright” said the Librarian “Georgia, this girl needs a library card” She called out to another Librarian “This is Ms Linksford, she will take your photo, get you a library number and a library card with all your details on it”
“Follow me” said Ms Linksford, walking towards a navy blue door that said Ms Linksford in black writing on a small white plaque.
“Stand against that wall please” said Ms Linksford pointing to a white wall in her office “While I get the camera.” Alyson stood against the wall and when Ms Linksford came with the camera.
“What is your name?” Ms Linksford asked
“Alyson Lynston” said Alyson
“Alright, smile”
When Alyson had had her photo taken and had been told her number (which was 3348) she went to the Librarian’s desk
“You will have to come back in about a week to get your library card” said the Librarian, giving the books to Alyson
“Thank you” Alyson said quietly, looking over her shoulder at the Librarian “Oh, sorry” Alyson mumbled, bumping into someone, just outside the library, dropping her books.
“Oh my god, I’m so sorry” said a distinctly male voice
“It’s OK” Alyson mumbled, crouching down to pick up her books
“Here, let me help you with that” said the male voice, bending down to help “really” he said in an amused tone; looking at the book he was holding “The very hungry caterpillar?”
“It’s for my little sister” Alyson lied, standing up and looking at him, he had strawberry blond hair, pale green eyes and tanned skin.
"oh, sure it is" he said mockingly
"Oh, sure it is" he said mockingly, handing her books to her “I’m Riley”
“I’m Alyson”
“That’s a strange name, how do you spell it?” he asked
“A-L-Y-S-O-N.” said Alyson quietly “Look, I have to go”
“Alright, I’ll see you around”
“Yeah, sure” she mumbled, hurrying to her locker so she could find out what she had, get her things and get to class and get to class before the siren went.
