Something ached. Something deep inside Shane just ached. There was a physical pain all over her body, true, but this was a deep, cavernous break in her heart. She wondered what was going on. She could tell she'd been hitting... but she hoped... no, she prayed she wasn't doing what she was feeling to Sam.

She didn't want to see. She didn't want to hear. She didn't want the flashes of awareness and vision. She didn't want any of it.

She just wanted to move.

It had been years, literal years, since she'd been able to move. She just wanted to move.

"Ugh!"

A brief sound of pain broke through the trance. She knew that voice...

Sam...

Dean sat on the bed of the motel. He was waiting. He had a few hours before he had to meet Shane. He didn't know what to do. His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a car engine outside.

knock knock knock

"Winchester? Ellen sent me. I've got-"

Dean threw the door open to reveal a man in a black leather jacket, black mid-calf boots, dark blue skinny jeans, and a red teeshirt.

"Who the hell are you?"

The man crossed his arms. "Derek. Ellen send me to give you this." Derek held out his hand to reveal the bronze pentagram necklace that Shane used to have.

Dean took the necklace from the man's hand, looking over it with regret and sadness. He had to think of a way to save Shane.

"So this kid," Derek began, awkwardly shifting his position, "how're you going to save her?"

Dean was surprised. Most hunters want to kill first and ask questions later. They didn't usually look deeper than the appearances. "Why the hell do you care?"

"Because. This kid matters to you, you matter to Ellen, and Ellen matters to me. I know she didn't send me here to do anything but give you the necklace, but you're short of hands right now, and I don't think that kid should die with a demon inside her."

Dean looked at the necklace in his hands. He knew Derek was right. "Alright fine. You can help."

Derek smiled. "You tell me what to do, I'll do it."

"Good," Dean scoffed, "that's the attitude I need right now."

——

Dean had sent Derek out to get food, and when he returned, Dean and Derek sat down to formulate a plan.

"Shane's smart," Dean began through a mouthful of hamburger, "so we can't just come in there guns blazing. She'll be prepared for that."

"Plus, you've got Shane's intelligence partnered with the intelligence and deviousness of a demon, so doing something she'd expect is a sure fire way to get killed."

Dean nodded. "Is there any way she'd know you came here?"

Derek thought about it for a moment before answering. "No. Not that I know of. I came from the opposite side of the state, so unless she's been monitoring you, then she doesn't even know I exist."

"Well kid, you just became my greatest asset."

Derek rolled his eyes. "Great. What're you thinking?"

Dean paused. "Sneak attack."

Derek raised an eyebrow. "What?"

"Shane specifically told me I can't bring weapons. So, I won't bring weapons. You will."

"Keep going..."

"I'll go in, distract Shane, interacting with her, keeping her busy, while you get a devil's trap set up to lock her in so I can exorcise that frickin demon and get her and Sam out safely."

Derek stared at Dean. "You think that'll work?"

Dean rubbed his eyes, "unless she see's it coming, yes."

Derek put his head in his hands. "Then let's hope she doesn't see it."

———

Dean drove up to the building and parked across the street. He held his hand in his hands. He'd given Derek a bag with a few weapons in it, along with a few items to attempt to bring Shane back and supplies to make a devil's trap, but he still had the pentagram.

He took a moment to try and clear his head.

He couldn't let anything happen to Sam. He just couldn't. But he couldn't imagine letting anything happen to Shane. Having Derek on his side helped, but he still wasn't sure how this would work. The only way it'd be ok was if Shane didn't know about Derek. But... it was a big risk to take.

Dean didn't care. All he knew was Sam was in danger, and so was Shane.

He had to get them out.
