Y/N and Steve were together for a long time before he met Nancy, it wasn't as straight forward as Steve cheating on Y/N with Nancy— that she would be able to deal with at least then she would have a reason to hate him. Y/N could feel her boyfriend at the time just slowly slipping away from her and that tore her heart apart, there wasn't a reason that Steve could give Y/N and that hurt her even more, she just accepted that he didn't love her anymore and that was fine.
Y/N was walking with her friends laughing and smiling as they group of girls made their way to the new shopping centre that had been built in Hawkins only a matter of months ago, while Y/N was with her friends she came across a bruised and bloody Steve holding a can of coke to his face to stop the swelling. Y/N knew she should've just kept walking with her friends since her ex boyfriend wasn't her concern anymore but yet her heart beat her head and she approached him.
"I'll catch you guys up." Y/N told her friends who reluctantly agreed to go ahead without her when they also saw Steve on his own— Y/N's friends were very protective of her because they were the ones who picked up the pieces when Steve left Y/N heartbroken with no apparent reason, "Looks sore." Y/N spoke up as she walked over to Steve.
"Y/N." Steve whispered, she gave him an awkward smile as the pair looked at each other
"What happened Steve?" She asked
"It doesn't matter just go with your friends, I'm fine Y/N." He sighed with the can of drink still pressed to his face. Y/N took a couple of steps closer and reaches into his jacket pocket and pulled out his car keys,
"Let's get you cleaned up." Y/N said
"It's fine Y/N you really don't have to I'm—"
"Just get in the car Steve." Y/N said seriously as she walked past him and got into the car, she put her hands on the steering wheel while Steve opened the passenger door and climbed inside. "So shall I take you home or to Nancy's?" Y/N asked the brunette boy
"Um— home I-I'm not with Nancy anymore she and Jonathan are a thing now." Steve admitted which in all honesty shocked Y/N,
"Oh right. Wow." Y/N whispered as she made her way back to Steve's place, when she arrived she parked the car and the pair left the vehicle and instead walked into Steve's family home. Y/N went straight to the kitchen cupboard and pulled out a first aid box and got Steve to sit at the kitchen table.
"You don't have to do this Y/N." Steve said as Y/N cleaned the dry blood from his face as she held his chin up in one hand
"Well we can't have that pretty face being ruined can we?" Y/N joked "Who did this to you anyway?"
"Billy and his friends, it's nothing major." Steve winced as Y/N cleaned the deeper cuts.
"He's a nasty piece of work, he tried making a move on me after you and Nancy—" Y/N accidentally let slip
"He what? Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because you left me Steve. For Nancy Wheeler and now, I come back from my summer break and find out that you two aren't even together anymore? You lasted all of three months whereas we had four years together. I take it she was worth it then." Y/N finally let out to Steve who was shocked at her harsh tone but couldn't deny that he didn't deserve it
"Y/N I'm so sorry I really am, I don't know why I left you for Nancy. She was fun at first but then everything just ran dry too quickly and soon there was nothing to talk about." He admitted and Y/N didn't flinch nor did she say a word "You don't have to clean me up Y/N I'm not your problem anymore."
"No, you may not be my problem Steve but I'm not going to let the boy I am so deeply and terribly in love with have a face all bloody and cut up." Y/N said casually
"You love me?" Steve asked
"Never stopped. Which was horrible to feel like that but I cannot help it you were my first and only love Steve and I think you still might be because I don't want anyone else. Ever." Y/N said sadly because she was ashamed that all of those words came pouring out of her,
"I love you Y/N, I was an idiot you are the girl who I want to spend the rest of my life with, to raise a family with, to grow old with, to go on stupid adventures together. You are it for me Y/N/N, you're my end." Steve said and Y/N nodded her head with tears in her eyes and she kissed Steve lovingly which he sighed into as he finally had the girl back who slipped through his fingers.
