I slap the back of his head, just hard enough to make him lurch forward,
"Elias, I know you're not paying attention anymore, you stopped nodding along."
He stands up, picks up his bow, draws his magic circle in the air over the string. Performing just enough of the spell to look like he did it without actually going through with it. He knocks his arrow and draws, firing dead in the centre of the target.
"You know, I don't even know why I'm even teaching you this enchantment, we all know you're the best archer in Vivensuila."
Elias has always been a bit of a space case, I've been his magic teacher for the past 5 years and whenever he can get away with it, he's been staring at nothing and thinking for all 5 of them. I guess that's a desirable enough trait in a prince, after all, he does have an entire country to sit at the head of in the future, I can't say I mind having a leader that actually thinks rather than sits there looking pretty or just does things for the sake of doing them, or I would if the royals weren't all just figureheads.
I actually think we're pretty good friends, despite my constant rambling and his spacing out, we're both about the same age, and he always ends up in my tower when he's had a difficult day. On holidays, he even brings over some wine or cider, and then it's his turn to ramble, it's a little funny how talkative he gets when he's drunk.
I plop down in the grass next to where he was sitting before, and he sits down next to me,
"So, What were you thinking about while I was trying to teach?"
He picks at the grass, ripping up handfuls and dumping them into my lap, "do you ever wonder what you'd be doing if you weren't teaching me magic?"
"Well, yeah, I've thought about it, I'd probably be a pharmacist, or something."
"Yeah, and your shop would be filled with cats, wouldn't it?"
"Probably, I might keep a snake and a bird there too, snake skin and feathers are surprisingly common in potions. Though if I became a pharmacist, you'd get all lonely." I jab him in the ribs, we both chuckle. "Yeah, you'd get so lonely that you'd probably come in, making up symptoms just so that you could talk to me."
"Haha, yeah... Aren't your parents pharmacists too?"
"My dad is, my mom works with plant magic and helps my dad by growing all the herbs he could ever need."
"You must miss them, you haven't gone to visit them in a while."
"Yeah, you're right, I haven't gone since the end of spring when it was just getting hot, I guess I ought to visit them again soon since it's getting chilly again."
"Why don't you surprise them, you know, visit them over the weekend without sending them a letter first, I'm sure they'd like that."
By now there's a big bald patch in the grass between us, all the grass is in my lap and Eli has to reach to get any decent clumps.
"If I didn't know any better, it sounds like you're trying to get rid of me, what, do you have a hot date this weekend? Some pretty girl you're afraid I'll scare off?"
His ears tint pink, and he turns his head away from me, scoffing, "The king wishes, I don't think you could scare off any more girls than I already have..." He sighs, "He's getting worse, you know..."
"Yeah, I bet he's pressuring you more than ever now that he's got so sick..."
He nods, "He's threatening to make my sister heir if I don't get a girl, and she's like TWELVE, but I guess she's just pretty or something 'cause she's got nobles coming from all over Vivensuila to take her around the capital on dates."
