Sea of Waves and Stars

For the past years of my life, I was living the luxurious life in the city. My dad was extremely rich and my mom loved me so much. I lived with Dad's riches and life was so good. Everything was going well, yet things changed.

Everything was fine, but my dad suddenly decided to make things worse.

What was supposed to be business trips turned into something that made our lives horrible. Those trips across the country wasn't for business, they were for his other family.

Another freaking family... another girl, another child.

"Are you really sure you're making the right decision? I know you need my money! Xinlong's a year away from graduating from college." Dad shouted at Mom but she already packed her stuff and mine.

"I always felt that you were hiding something from us, but now it's all clear. This is it. After our divorce papers get sorted out, we're moving somewhere far away, where you can never bother us again."

Yes, I'm almost graduating with a degree in education, all thanks to Dad's riches. But now that they're getting a divorce, I don't have access to that luxury anymore. It's kinda disappointing that I won't be finishing college anytime soon, but I'm pretty smart, and I knew well what my dad has done for us to do this.

He cheated.

I know what he did, but I still don't know why he did that. No matter how smart I get, I don't think I'll ever understand why. That's why I decided that coming with my mom was the best option, even if that meant not graduating.

I hate my dad.

We stayed in a hotel for some time. Every night, I spent them by looking out from the window into the sea of stars in the sky, asking myself why. Why did things become like this? Why? Just... why?

Before I knew it, I didn't have a father anymore. That luxurious life I was living, it was now being lived by that other family of his.

"Where are we going?" I asked Mom. We rode buses and trains that I wasn't sure if we were still in China.

"To my hometown, where life is slow and I could heal the wounds your dad left in my heart."

I was excited about this hometown she was talking about. It seemed like such a nice place, but I was wrong.

It was way different than what I thought it'd be.

"Welcome to 静岩 JingYan." I read the huge sign infront of us. "Is this it? JingYan?"

"Yes, Xinlong. This is where I was born. My hometown."

I took a deep breath and instantly, I could smell the sea. The town was right beside the sea, extending from the shore below to the rocky cliffs with clusters of houses above, overlooking the sea and beyond. It was very different from the city. Buildings were made out of wood and stone bricks and greenery covered the area.

"Come, Xinlong. You should meet your grandparents."

She took me to an old-looking house at the top of the rocky cliffs. Instead of the marble tiles and glass windows of Dad's house in the city, it was made out of wood and the windows are... non-existent. Bugs could literally fly in and out no problem.

"Ma. Ba." Mom called out. An old lady emerged from the depths of the wooden house, followed by an old man holding a cane.

"It's been so long since I've last seen you." The old lady hugged Mom. She was speaking in a weird dialect but I could still understand what she was saying.
