Chapter 1
It was cold and I could feel the grass in between my toes. I could feel the fresh summer breeze against the left side of my face as I woke up. I was still lying down next to the giant willow tree that we decided to make camp under last night. The smell of the camp fire was still fresh in the air. I don’t know what day it is now. All I know is that my friends and I have been on the run since the first wave hit. I’m still trying to get used to the fact that the zombie apocalypse that we all thought was never going to happen actually happened.
It hurts to sit up the piece of bark that I was lying against last night wasn’t very comfortable. I look over at my little sister Angie to see if she is awake yet. Angie has red hair and brown eyes she is twelve years old and she is 5.1. She was cuddled up in her sleeping bag clutching onto the teddy bear mom and dad gave to her the day before we first started to hear about the virus.
In total (including me) there are five of us in our group. We started out with ten but we ran into some trouble last week and now it is down to five. I’m Anastasia and I have brown wavy hair brown eyes and I’m about 5.5 I just turned sixteen a week before the first wave. My friend Jessica (Jess) is 5.3 and she has blond hair and brown eyes she is also sixteen. Jamie is the oldest out of all of us he is seventeen he has scraggly blond hair and blue eyes he is also the tallest he is 6.1. The fifth person in our group is Eric. Eric is 6 foot has short brown hair he is three days younger then Jamie and he has green eyes.
We are making our way to Colorado. My uncle John used to say these kinds of things would happen but no one ever believed him. He has a cabin up in _____. He made it totally zombie proof and now we are going up there to live with him and my aunt Becky.
I am the only one up so I grab two cans of soup out of my bag and start the fire. The grass is starting to turn green and the trees are starting to get leaves which tell me that it is spring time. The soup is almost done now and I wake up everyone to eat. The sun tells me that it is almost nine o’clock.
“Hey Jamie can we go back to the river I want to get clean and refill my water bottle before we head off again”, Jess asked as she reached for a spoon for the soup
“Um … sure I guess I could use a quick rinse myself but we better make it fast because we have a lot of ground to cover before night fall”.
“Hey I remember seeing a few berry bushes by the river it slipped my mind yesterday but do you think we could grab some for the road I mean we could fill up one of the large plastic bags we grabbed while we raided the gas station” I say as I put a mouthful of soup in my mouth.
“Yeah”, Eric says with a grin “Anastasia and I can grab the berries while the three of you wash up since we already washed up yesterday”.
“Ok but make sure that you two stick together we don’t need to lose any more members from our group” he says glaring at Eric and I. He waves his hand at Angie with a grin “come on kid grab your stuff and let’s go we got to hurry if we want to be outta here by noon.”
Jamie, Jess, and Angie all get their stuff back in their bags and start walking down to the river.
While Eric and I finish up our soup we toss the cans and get our stuff back in our bags.
“So how did you sleep last night?” Eric asks as he shoves his sleeping bag into his backpack.
“Ok I mean it wasn’t the comfort ablest place I have slept in but at least I was warm right?” I glance out of the corner of my eye and see that he is having trouble with his sleeping bag.
I walk over to him and grab the backpack from him and shove the sleeping bag inside and zip it up.
“Thanks” he says with the slightest hint of red on his cheeks.
