Amerie Banks

"JESSICA BANKS" I said frantically to the lady at the hospital reception desk. I had gotten a call that my mother got into a car accident and she was at this hospital.

"Room 24" she replied as she kept typing away. I rushed to the room and saw my mother connected to all these machines. I placed my purse and ran to her side.

"Oh my gosh, Mommy you ok?" I asked. She couldn't respond all she gave me was a slight nod. Her skin was covered in scratches and bruises. It made my heart broke.

My mother was the sweetest person ever, it was because of an idiot drunk driver she was in this mess. I rubbed her hand and continued to console her. "It's gonna be okay, I got you" I said reassuring her.

Knock knock, "Come in" I looked at the door and watched my mother's doctor come in.

"You must be Amerie?" He reached out his hand to shake mine. " Hi, I'm Dr. Joseph Martin, it says here that you are your mother's proxy."

"Yes I am," I responded.

"Can you step outside with me for a few minutes?" He looked toward the door. "We will be back Ms. Banks" he addressed my mother.

We stood outside the door and he spoke in a low tone. He took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes. "This is always the worst part, been doing this for 25 years and it never gets easier." He spoke with a frown on his face.

I stood there waiting for him to get to the point. Maybe my mom needed surgery or she needed help for the rest of her life. I don't care about any of that stuff as long as she is alive.

"Your mother was in a car accident as you know.. she is in critical condition. When the car hit her it forced a blood vessel to rupture and bleed into her brain. If this was on the outside on the brain I would be able to stop it but since this is in the deepest part there would be no point in surgery. Cutting a person's brain that deep is very dangerous and risky. Only 20% of people make it off the table and there quality of life is severely impacted."

"Severely impacted how?" I asked. I felt tears flooding my eyes cause I knew where this conversation is going.

"They are on life support meaning that they can't breathe or do anything on their own." He replied.

"And if she doesn't get the surgery?" I asked in a low tone.

"She will die in a matter of a few days," he responded. "I know this is difficult Amerie and I'm so so sorry you have to go through this."

I nodded and he reached out to hug me. "Take your time and decide what's best for your mother and what's best for your family," he spoke into my ear. I let go of him and continue to cry. He gave me a little head nod and walked off.

"ma'am would you like some fresh air?" A nurse approached me. I nodded and looked at my sleeping mother threw the glass window before heading to the elevator.

I stood in the elevator by myself which was good cause I needed to cry. As the elevator descended from the 8th floor it stopped at the 6th floor and the door opened and a man walked inside.

I quickly wiped my tears. I didn't want to make this an awkward ride for him. The man was about 6"3 and looked older. I would guess around 40s. He wore a dark grey suit and his cologne filled the elevator.

I just couldn't stop my sniffing and I tried to stop my tears from running down my cheeks. "I'm sorry," I apologized to him.

"nah nah it's cool, don't apologize okay? I don't know what happened but it's good to let it out" he replied to me. "Here" he handed me a a few pieces of tissues.
