There were many things I knew about Silas University before I coming here. I knew it was deadly. Take the most aggressive people from your society and put them in an enclosed space and what more do you expect. We weren't your dull pacifists of Summerville. Nor were we the ingenious bureaucrats of Winston.
We were the weapon class. Our only job was to kill and ask questions later. There was no problem we couldn't solve with a little bit of violence.
And as the days went by the more I realized how naive I was to think that I would end up anywhere but here. This is everything Olivia has been training me for. No thoughts, just murder. The problem we were having was only who the target should be.
But Olivia must be dumber than she looked if she thought that Silas would make me have a change of heart. Sure I just nonchalantly walked over the unconscious body of some unknown Familiar to get my dinner but that didn't mean I somehow loved Potentials. It meant that I was hungry and it was meatloaf Monday.
"Is this blood or ketchup?" Sebby inspected his dinner as we sat down in our regular seats.
"The only ketchup they had was in packets buddy..." I said sympathetically.
"What the fuck!" Sebastian exclaimed. "If I wanted some 3rd year's blood as my side dish I would have smashed his skull in myself!"
"What we're they even fighting about?" I asked through a mouthful of food.
"There was only one cookie left and he wanted it," Georgie shrugged.
"Okay yeah understandable," I chuckled.
"But my meatloaf!" Sebby whined and I rolled my eyes and then reached over and took the chunk off that had a drop of blood on it and threw it behind me.
"See all better," I shrugged but Sebby looked paler than normal.
"Um...." Sebby pointed behind me and I slowly turned around expecting the worst.
Normally, any Familiar would be petrified by the sight of the meatloaf they just blindly threw behind them running down the cheek of a Potential. But since that Potential's name was neither Penny nor Violet, I was actually relieved.
"In my defense," I winced in sympathy as he wiped meat from his eye. "I did not know you were behind me."
Kaleb Nguyen was not your typical Potential. Firstly, because he didn't always look angry, vengeful, and deceitful. In fact, though Kaleb was a powerful witch it was not his talent that he was well-known for. It was his looks. The heart throb of our generation. His jaw, chiseled by the Gods, his frame, shaped like a marble statue come to life, and his stature, tall enough to touch the heavens.
Even with his mother as an infamous General for the Authority, all the newspapers cared about was what Kaleb was wearing or who he was dating. Most power hungry Potentials would be insulted but not Kaleb. I've never seen a picture without his big boyish grin covering the page.
He was always giving interviews to anyone who asked, answering even the most invasive questions with dignity and class. It was hard to not like the guy. He had more charisma in his left pinky finger than I did in my whole body. Which likely explained how he got a new accessory decorating his arm
"It's Valenta, right?" I sensed a smile creeping at the corners of his lips. "Lucy Valenta?"
"No-"
"I've been meaning to introduce myself," he continued excitedly not even letting me get my lie out. "I've heard so much about you."
"All good I'm sure," I said sarcastically.
"No it was quite horrible actually," he plopped himself uninvited on the empty seat next to me.
