I didn't know how hard it was to pick out a dress. Last time, Alice had been the one to do my make-up and hair for me but now I was on my own. I didn't know how to apply make-up or do my hair properly outside of the occasional braid. Perhaps I could have upcycled my old dress into something else, but I lacked the skills to do so.
I hadn't known Jessica was coming with us until I got into Angela's car.
"She's joined last minute," I could hear the nervousness in Angela's voice. If I had looked at my text messages that morning, I would have known earlier. It was on me.
"I'm okay with it."
I wasn't sure where we stood with each other, Jessica and I. The cinema situation must have stung a lot as she was still mad about it. I would be too if I were in Jessica's place. Jessica was the one who chatted up the car, much to my and Angela's amusement. There was always one extroverted person in a room of introverts.
Last time, I hadn't taken an interest in what kind of dresses they were wearing. I thought shopping was a tiring concept and normally picked whatever it was that I could find and hoped for the best, but I promised myself that I would at least try to make some fashion comments.
Angela said she would give me a gold star for effort.
In the end, I was the one who was struggling to find a dress. I held up a pinkish-looking dress and held it up to my neck in the mirror. I wasn't sure about the cut.
"I don't know about the color," Jessica looked skeptically. "I don't think you should go for a solid color because you're already quite pale - no offense."
"None taken, Jess. This is actually my first time doing all of this alone."
"Who did it last time?"
"Alice Cullen."
Jessica pursed her lips at the comment. "Well, then Alice Cullen has a great taste but she doesn't know how to dress you as you, if you know what I meant. You didn't look all too comfortable."
"My leg was in a brace."
"Which means she should have covered it up with a longer dress," Jessica sighed dramatically. "You don't need that reminder every time you look at your prom pictures."
I knew Angela was cracking up as Jessica fussed over me. "You are dating the hottest athlete in town - heck, the entire region if you will - and I will not let you show up looking like you got a dress off the rack. I'll even let you wear converses for your dyspraxic butt, you just need to look great."
"There's only so much you can do."
"It has to fit you, not everyone's expectations - that's where I defer from Lauren. Gosh, she was so annoying about my dress last year! So what if I want to push up my boobs?"
"I'd go the extra mile this year," Angela added. "You know if they don't dress code you for it."
"They can't dress code me if we're graduating in a few months," she said solemnly. "I'll sue."
It felt comical. I thought she had been mad and though she had apologized for calling Charlie she never made any indication that she was ready to reconcile whatsoever. Her picking the dress and actually offering to teach me how to do my hair and makeup felt like her way of telling me that it was okay.
And I was okay with that. I felt bad that I had nothing more to offer her in our friendship, but I was going to let prom be.We ate lunch at Bora's BBQ and Hoseok gave me more food to give both Jungkook and Charlie while I was there. He was running the restaurant while Jin was in Seattle for business-related things.
