After giving advice to the young brunette, the lady pitcher waited for Chris to have a talk with him about today's match. When she finally approached the older catcher after he was all cleaned up and finished with his meal, he gave Kat a warm smile and obliged her.
The moment Kat and Chris were talking privately, she rained her thoughts down on him. He discussed and elaborated on certain points with her. "So you're left-handed? Why'd you use your right that time?" The green-eyed senpai inquired.
"Because I don't want them to know I'm ambidextrous. Kumbaga, I wanted to surprise them. But when we lost last summer, I made up my mind to finally use my dominant arm." The lady pitcher replied with a solemn tone.
"I see." His eyes softened as lips pulled upwards into a fond smile as he observed the lady's determined form, "I will help you make the most out of it. Being an ambidextrous pitcher is such a rare thing and we might be able to reach our dream stage, the Koshien."
The lady pitcher's eyes glistened in awe at his senpai's declaration. "Sure! I'd love to!" Kat cheered.
Chris thought that she was such an earnest person, and that it was adorable. He wasn't particularly sure of when he started to feel an odd responsibility for her, but he felt like he would welcome a sister into his life.
Of course, the lady pitcher did not miss the opportunity to gush at how amazingly he'd handled the situation and taught Sawamura and how she still had much to learn if she wanted to achieve his level of brilliance.
She heard a light chuckle. Looking up, she was met with the relatively stoic catcher chuckling, the more pleasant expression on his face. A complete contrast to his expression when she met him originally.
Kat couldn't help it. She really couldn't. Her heart constricted as an immense weight she hadn't even been aware of lifted off of her chest and shoulders, leaving her unhindered. Before she knew it, a tear streaked down her cheek, past the massive smile that broke across her face.
The older catcher looked back at Kat, and upon making eye contact, her smile grew, while her tears flowed. The sight left the older catcher baffled. Kat smile was as radiant as could be, but she is crying? Why on earth would she be crying? "What's wrong?" Chris inquired, confusion and concern braided into his question.
Kat looked away bashfully, "I-I'm sorry," she chuckled lightly, "I really did- didn't mean to cry," she wiped her tears, "I'm not too sure what came over me. I-I was just so... so happy!" she look him in the eyes again, "Senpai, that was the first time I've seen you happy, genuinely happy."
The son of a pro's eyes widened slightly. "Today, when you played," she took a moment to take a breath, "you looked so happy." her cheeks hurt from the extent of her smile. "You looked alive." she looked back down. "I'm so happy."
It was silent for a moment. That was when the lady pitcher realized something, "I mean you, uh, well, okay, I didn't mean to insult you, but most days you don't look that alive, and just.. I'm gonna, I'm gonna stop before I make this worse, yeah..."
Chris let out an amused exhale, his large palm finding it to the top of her head, patting her and ruffling her hair a bit, "Thank you."
That night Chris had taken Miyuki's stead as Kat's escort back to her dorm. He decided that she should probably be allowed the privacy of keeping her tears a secret. Thinking back on it, he decided that was when he made up his mind that he was to be your older brother figure. Little had he known you would be adopting a younger sibling of your own.
